ONEIRIC.SPACE DIGEST N°2—November 2019
Oneiric Space
Hello!

Can you believe it's November already? How quickly (or slowly) time passes by is on our minds again, especially in relation to this line by Vanda Scaravelli from her book on yoga titled Awakening the Spine: "We are always in a hurry, we run, we run, we run, in order to be able to do as many things as possible: to achieve, to become, to obtain."

In the dream world, the ways in which we perceive time are even more elusive. Perhaps, more importantly, it's helpful to remember that in waking life we can do things to create a sense of time that feels right to us at a given moment.

Do octopuses dream?
via The New York Times
In October, a video of an octopus affectionately named Heidi went viral. The clip was from a PBS documentary, dubbed Nature, and sees Heidi sleeping while her body changes colors and patterns. David Scheel, a marine biologist and researcher at Alaska Pacific University, narrated the clip and said, "If she's dreaming, this is a dramatic moment." Since then, there's been a lot of discussion about what Heidi was really doing and whether octopuses can "dream" in the way that humans do.

Last month, our friends at Taupe Magazine launched their inaugural issue. The online research platform, which examines "the complex phenomenon of color in a digital age", is filled with stunning artworks (like the one above by Ariel Ting Wei Lu) and in-depth explorations of color from a variety of disciplines. For issue one, ONEIRIC.SPACE editor Charmaine Li wrote an essayistic piece investigating the relationship between color and dreams. Thank you to Jamie Raap, founder and creative director of Taupe Magazine, for suggesting the idea.

QUOTE FOR THOUGHT
“What we experience in dreams, as long as we experience it often enough, ends up belonging to the total economy of our soul just as much as anything we have really experienced.”

—Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil
WHAT WE SAVED, STARRED OR STILL HAVE OPEN IN OUR TABS
A performer uses brain-mapping technology to scan her dreams. A recent article on Hyperallergic discussed how Indonesian performance artist Melati Suryodarmo used an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine to scan her dreams and then gave this data to her collaborators to create music and visuals to accompany her performances.

Oneironautics in Broccoli Magazine Issue 6. Ellen Freeman, writer and deputy editor at Broccoli, delves into lucid dreaming in the latest issue of our favorite magazine covering contemporary cannabis culture.

How close are we to video-recording our dreams? An oldie (from April 2018) but a goodie. We spotted this CNN article in one of the dream Facebook groups we're a part of (lol) and thought it was worth sharing.

ICYMI: In July 2019, Mask Magazine released its 'Dream Issue'.
