KPS Fees for 2020.

Same as lasts year, in fact same as for the last few years. We are able to be one of the lowest fee clubs in the state due to the additional income that we get from members taking on projects that bring income directly into the club, including a very good deal from the school on rent, based on KPS helping out at events such as graduations, etc.

KPS would like to be as cashless as possible, the preferred payment method for anything to KPS is via EFT. Our Treasurer hates weekly trips to the bank. (Lyn and I were recently in Stockholm, you cannot even buy a coffee in McDonalds with cash)

How to pay – Go to www.knoxcameraclub.org. under “ Information” , under “Other Things”, under “How can I pay KPS Money” or under FAQ, How can I pay you money.
Paying your membership via the KPS Online Shop is the bestr way to keep your membership current.

If your details have changed since you filled out a membership form, eg. Fill out a new form and hand it to Peter or Lyn (Treasurer and Assist Treasurer). To get a form Go to www.knoxcameraclub.org. under “ Information” , under “Other Things”, under “Membership Form”.

Please Note: If you have not paid your membership fees you cannot enter Image Evaluation after April. Nor will you have aqccess to the KPS Members Only Facebook Page.,

After a policy change by the club committee, all non members will be removed from “Members Only” Pacebook page after the AGM. April 22nd 2020

KPS fees for 2020, Jan 1 to Dec 31 will soon be due, but you can pay now.
Just go here

Single $50

Concession (receiving a Centerlink Pension) $40

Family (2 adults and dependent children) $65

First Image EValuation for 2020

Hand in for the first evaluation for 2020 is our first meeting back which is February 12.
It's the KPS National so please have your entries ready for Feb 12.
Note that in 2020 hand in for evaluations will be the same night as the evaluation ie there will be a month between hand in and evaluation.
Did you get one of our First Aid Kits for the Alexandra Weekend?

Well, we want them back!  Can you please return them no later than our November 13 meeting, although the committee will be meeting on November 6 so you could return them then (and enjoy the spectacle that is a KPS Committee Meeting - we often need the first aid kits by meetings end).

Outings

November outing to Werribee. The plan is to visit the B24 Liberator restoration project at Werribee. This is on the corner of Princess Hwy (Old) and Farm Rd Werribee. I believe there is an admission charge (donation) of approx $5 with maybe a discount for seniors. Website https://www.b24australia.org.au/home

For details head to the Lightroom Queen's website here for lots of information.

Syllabus 2020

Shortly the syllabus for 2020 will be available. Here are a few advanced notes I believe we will see.

Catagories: Mono, Scapes, Wildlife & Nature, Portrait, Photo Journalism. Max 1 image /person/section. Max 5 entries per person. Knox Biodiversity Project

Richard Kelly is our Biodiversity Project Guru and as such, he is the go to bloke for information as well as the recipient of the images that he will pass on to Knox Council. Having said that, he is busy for a while so please don't send him any images until further notice. Lots of information is just below.

From Richard:
The images are to go into a brochure (called a passport) which will be prepared by council for distribution to residents. The brochure is to encourage residents to explore and become familiar with the pockets of remnant bushland which still exists within Knox.

It is envisaged that residents will “Tick Off” the sites as they visit them.

So, our images should be designed to make the area look so attractive as to encourage a visit by the residents and their families.

Landscapes, including (or not) any built infrastructure, perhaps with a person enjoying the amenity, would all be candidates for inclusion in the brochure. Images of the flora and fauna on site would also be a big hit with Council.

So if you capture an image that is interesting to you then probably it will be interesting to others too.

Personally I think an iconic image is a curving path disappearing into the bush and I am sure at least one pic like that will make in to the brochure, but probably not for every site.

Images should be in JPEG format in the highest resolution possible (ie DON'T resize them and please shoot at the best possible quality your camera can produce).

We should provide maybe 10 images from each site – anywhere between 5 and 20 I should think. I’m not in a position to make a selection so whatever you send to me I will pass on the Council.

There is a Google Document online that has a list of the sites we need to phorograph as well as a list of sites already photographed. Anyone with the link can edit this document so if you photograph a piece of bushland, please add this place to the list of photographed places.  You don't need to save anything, Google does it for you.

Open the page, add your bit, exit the page. Seriously easy.

Shopping for new Camera Equipment.

Over the years, I have learned a lot about buying Camera Equipment. Many years ago, I just looked at getting the best prices but because Nikon cameras purchased overseas online only had a supplier’s warranty, I restricted my purchases to mainly online shops in Australia except when travelling overseas through Hong Kong or Singapore. Even there I made sure that the equipment came with a genuine Manufacturer’s warranty.

What is a supplier’s warranty and why don’t you always get a Manufacturer’s warranty. Camera equipment sold on what is called the Grey Market and not from an Authorised Retailer does not come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Those outlets buy direct from the manufacturer at a cheaper price. That means that they have to supply the warranty.

I get a bit wary getting cameras that only have a supplier’s warranty. What happens if the supplier goes out of business?

One of my purchases was from a supplier at Endeavour Hills. He was purchasing stock from the manufacturer and then selling it with a ‘suppliers’ warranty. Oops, the value of the Australian dollar changed significantly and he was stuck with stock that he could only sell at a loss. He went out of business. I was lucky that the lens that I had purchased from him was over 12 months old and therefore would not have been covered under warranty anyway. Whew. I was about to buy another lens from him just before he went out of business.

Since then I have purchased my equipment from a supplier in Point Cook, Victoria. He has been in business for several years and as he does not keep any stock and the goods come direct from Asia to you I was not too concerned. I was getting camera equipment cheaper than retail and I did not question whether he was paying GST on his sales.

The last equipment purchase from him, that was delivered to me, had a customs declaration on the outside of the box, which I decided to look at. The item was sold to me for $2700 but the customs declared value was $800. Oops. Something fishy. This was in the days when items imported under $1000 did not attract GST. Now I found out why the equipment from online suppliers was cheaper. Not only did they take a chance that there would not be a warranty claim but they were also stealing from the taxpayer. Yes, they were stealing from you and me.

That was the end of me buying online from Australian suppliers many of whom only had an Australian phone number and so-called official business address.

Now I buy only from reputable suppliers who have a physical presence in Australia. They are more likely to be running a good business and paying their taxes.

I now get quotes from four locations, one being Croydon Camera house, and compare them.

From Croydon Camera House I do not just use their advertised price but call and ask to speak to the owner, Nigel.

The last purchase of Olympus equipment overall was cheaper from him. I could have saved a few dollars by purchasing one item elsewhere but I preferred to buy them all from one place if possible. Most important I got a Manufacturer’s warranty.

Therefore, to end the story, get quotes from reputable suppliers, make sure, you are getting an Australian Warranty and if using Croydon Camera House don’t just use their advertised prices or talk to their staff – ask Nigel.

Writer: Alfred Zommers

A personal note from Rob: I have been purchasing from the Croydon Camera Store (actually Nigel’s father before Nigel), before “Camera House” was a brand name, and 2 store locations ago, and still do.
I have purchased from other suppliers and this has been fine. My personal recommendation is as Alfred says, look to a reputable Australian Supplier that complies with Australian Consumer, and Commercial Trading laws.
