Fast Company Innovation Festival Day 3

Hello friends,

It's day three of the festival and we are really in the thick of things now,  the sun is shining in NYC and the festival hub is buzzing with people working, going to sessions and getting caffeinated.

Today we heard from the CEO of the Time's Up movement and got a tour of the Bloomberg offices.

Session one, An interview with Time's Up CEO Tina Tchen

Tina Tchen, the new CEO of Time's Up was interviewed by Fast Company on what's next for the brand that created a movement, so quickly, almost two years ago.

The key points that were made were:

  • The last two years they have been almost playing catch up with the huge wave of support and calling out that was received when the movement launched.
  • What's next? They are looking into new studies with funding from Melinda Gates to fund an empath lab where they will create a beat practice report so they will be able to let big business know what the best ways are to create an inclusive and diverse work environment.
  • In talking about the brand of Time's Up and wanting to make sure everyone, not just Hollywood, feels ownership over the movement. They talked about the fact that they have a great recognisable brand but not a strategy, the strategy has actually come from hearing their “customer” stories and building the strategy around that gap in the market.
  • They spoke about the importance of startups investing in values and a mission and culture from day one so that when they grow and scale they don’t have problems that will need to be addressed and are much harder to address once the company is big.
Company values and culture is becoming a huge theme of this conference. In every session, someone is talking about their importance.

Session two. tour of the Bloomberg office

A quick walk through Central Park and we were at the Bloomberg office ready to see inside the media offices.

For anyone familiar with NYC the office is at 731 Lexington when the office was built, it was known because it had the worlds first circular escalator.

All their 120 offices around the world are built on the three F’s
Food: snack stations are at the centre of their common areas.
Flowers: fresh flowers are in all areas of the office.
Fish: fish tanks and koi ponds are in all of the common spaces.

Everything is thought through, the coffee they use is sourced from female-owned farms in Rwanda and wind turbines out near the JFK power all their buildings in the city.

The top levels of the building are residential, Beyoncé and Jay Z once lived in the building!

Mike Bloomberg started Bloomberg which also builds the Bloomberg Terminal. The Terminal can produce 1 Billion pieces of data a day and helps to analyse financial markets all around the world.

Bloomberg TV news can get a story, written and live within 4 mins including graphics and in 12 languages. That’s in part, due to the Bloomberg terminal being able to access data so quickly.

27,000 journalists and 500 researchers to analyse the data from the Bloomberg terminal.

We are halfway through the week, Thursday will be another big day and Friday programing will finish early. Looking forward to sending through a wrap of the final two days of the Fast Company Innovation Festival.
