CDI Student of the Month
Congratulations to October's Student of the Month, Sarian Jackson!
Sarian is a friendly, positive, and outgoing member of the CDI. She is always there make people smile and feel welcome, and she never hesitates to lend a helping hand to the clubs of the CDI. She is brave and unafraid, vocal in her passions and never shying away from educating others about her culture. Through her fierce desire to make herself heard and her unwavering ability to stand for what she believes in, Sarian acts as an advocate for diversity in the CDI, breaking down misconceptions and prejudices little by little.
Sarian is a Sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice. She is currently serving as the Vice President of Activities for the Black Student Union.
Registration
Hope all you Seniors and Juniors registered for your classes without a hitch! Here's the rest of the registration dates:
Sophomores (30-59 credits): Monday, November 11th, at 8 AM
Freshmen (0-29 credits): Wednesday, November 13th, at 8 AM
First-year students, don't forget to meet with your Academic Advisor to remove your RAC number. The RAC number will prevent you from registering for the classes you need, so make sure to schedule an appointment and talk to them before your registration date comes up.
Don't forget that you can come into the CDI and ask any Beacon for help with organizing classes or making plans—we'd love to help you out!
Study Abroad Scholarships
Interested in studying abroad? Here are a couple scholarships to help you out with that:
INSIGHT Into Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship for Underrepresented Students. INSIGHT Into Diversity is awarding a $2,000 scholarship to five individual students currently enrolled in a baccalaureate-granting institution, graduate school, or health profession school. The international education programs students can apply for now are for Summer 2020 and Fall 2020. To find out more and apply, click here!
SUU's Financial Aid Office is also offering $250 scholarships to students of various backgrounds to study abroad during the summer, fall, or spring semesters. If you are from a diverse background, are a first-generation student, served in the military, Native American, or are a non-traditional student 25 years or older, you'll need to write an essay explaining why you should be awarded this scholarship. Events
Native American Heritage Week
This week is Native American Heritage week. Support our Native American friends in the last of their events for the week:
Thursday, November 7 from 11 AM to 1 PM. Come join us in the Starlight Room in the second floor of the Student Center for Information Day. This is your chance to ask questions and learn more about different Native American cultures to enrich your knowledge.
Friday, November 8 at 5:30 PM. The Native American Student Association will be holding a Native American Showcase in the Starlight Room this Friday.
Welcome to Gwichyaa Zhee Showing
On Thursday, November 7th, the Red Rock Film Festival will be showcasing a few films relevant on Native communities protecting their sovereignty and the places they rely on for their culture and way of life. This problem is particularly felt in the plight of the Gwich'in people in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Join us at the Shooting Star Room in the Hunter Conference Center on Wednesday, November 13 from 4:00 to 5:50 PM for an interactive training session on how to be more inclusive and be a better ally for our LGBTQ+ community members. See you there!Native American Students Scholarship Opportunity The Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance are offering a scholarship to eligible students. OUR MISSION The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) exists to validate the multiple identities present on our campus, while integrating the voices and experiences of marginalized people. We provide emotional, social, and financial support to students from historically underrepresented communities (e.g. students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, first-generation college students, etc.)
The CDI collaborates with campus partners to foster a learning environment that respects multiple perspectives and differences through multicultural clubs, workshops, trainings and cultural programming. The CDI invites members of the campus community to join in conversation about how to cultivate an inclusive, safe, and welcoming campus culture.
