Record Broken, then Broken

The fourth wicket partnership record has stood since 2014  when Michael Olsen and Jared Sun put on 161 together at Victoria Park against Grafton.
This was broken two Saturdays ago on Devonport Domain when Graeme Beghin and Ronnel Hira scored 173 together.
Then last Saturday, again on Devonport Domain, the Fourth Wicket Partnership was broken again. Two young guns in Simon Keene (100) and Sam Hinds (95) smashed 185.
Congratulations to all.

Coach's Comments

"I've always related cricket to a game of chess.
Lots of different moves happen throughout a game and the team in control often varies throughout the day.
Saturday was a classic day of two-day cricket. We might be far from the total package at present but we sure are entertaining!
We got off to a pretty reasonable start after losing the toss and being asked to bat. There was some searching stuff from Papateotoe and at lunch we found ourselves in the slightly precarious position of 114/3.
As the coach the thing that is pleasing me the most presently is that we have different people standing up every week. This week it was the chance for two of our young bucks to lead the way. If you haven't had the chance to get down to the Domain to watch Simon Keene play cricket I strongly suggest you do before it's too late because I don't think it will be too long before Simon starts to be pulled away for representative duties.
Hopefully, for our sake he can continue in his current vein up until that point because presently he is a joy to watch taking the fight to the opposition at every possible juncture. Simon and Sam Hinds put on 185 for the 5th wicket, which I believe might be a record for the club. Sam has been around the Premier team for a number of seasons now but has never quite reached the levels he knows he can. Saturday was a really heartwarming moment as he steered the team away from a very vulnerable position to one of complete control. He showed all the wisdom of his 80 Premier games as he went past his previous high score of 53 to fall just short of his maiden premier century with a tremendous 95. At the other end Simon brought up his maiden century for the club at a run a ball which was an amazing moment for the team.

Following on from the highs of Sam and Simon we were brought crashing back to life by former first class cricketer Bupinder Singh who tore through our middle and lower order to take a five wicket bag and wrap up our innings for 292.
On the whole, we were happy but it was an opportunity missed after being 263/3. Cricket is all about momentum and due to the way we finished our innings we allowed Papatoetoe to feel like they were on top. If there was any question around that their openers certainly addressed it in aggressive fashion as they raced out to 80/0 off the first 10 overs.
I was a bit in shock to be honest, you just don't see this sort of start too often in Two-Day cricket. However, resilience is a core part of our team and we found a way to get ourselves back in the game through 170 game veteran Tim Duncraft who used his whole bag of tricks in what was an impressive spell of bowling (3/33). The other pleasing contribution came from Tendai who put in his best shift of the season thus far grabbing two crucial wickets to firmly put us in control at the end of day one.

We know the job isn't finished, far from it, and we know what is still required to be done and we look forward to advancing the game again on Saturday."

Two Heads are Better than one

A nice moment on Saturday before the start of play when two home-grown North Shore players received their Premier baggy caps in a little ceromony with the players and family gathered around.
On the left is Simon Keene, wearing "Player of the day" shirt and on the right, keeper Andy Strain.

Congratulations guys!

Premiers Push Papatoetoe
After a long wait the North Shore Premier side finally returned to the Hedley Howarth championship for the first time in seven years.
It was a day that meant a lot to many at the club especially those who had been there through all the years fighting in the 2nd tier.
It was also a day that reflected a fresh start for the side in 2-Day cricket. This was on display when two young homegrown talents received their Premier baggys before the days play. Andy Strain who always brings his unique brand of zestiness, and Simon Keene who's been scaring opposition Bowlers and batsman since day one at the club were the proud recipients of these caps.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Mitchell Bremner and Ryan Thomson got the side off to a solid start moving the score into the 30s. Two wickets in an over left the side in a precarious position and then when Thomson was dismissed for 35 the game was in the balance with Shore 78/3 and in need of a big partnership.
It came via two home-grown youngsters, Simon Keene and Sam Hinds.
The pair added 185 for the fourth wicket (A NSCC record). Keene ruthlessly attacked the spinners off both the front and back foot, while Hinds took all of his boundaries, 13 fours and a six, from the seamers. Keene’s first Premier century, included 11 fours and 4 sixes. Hinds fell five short of the same feat. Both players played wonderfully, Simon showing brutal power combined with a fine touch and Sam playing an innings of true class.
A late order collapse left Shore all out for 292 and with 27 overs left to bowl in the day.

Josh Plummer the Papatoetoe opener was in no mood to muck around in pursuit of the score. The opener hit 66 off 39 balls, as Papatoetoe raced to 89/0 in the 12th over.
The experienced Tim Duncraft stemmed the flow with three wickets, including the big one of Plummer caught pulling to the leg side boundary. Tendai Chitongo struck two further blows to reduce the visitors to 127/5 at the close of play.
A great turn around and a day headlined by two fantastic knocks leaves Shore in a great position as they pursue their first victory back in the top flight.

Reserves Suffer
It was a rough showing for the North Shore Reserve Team as they took on a strong batting line-up from Cornwall.
Despite an early strike from Angus Frew they were up against it as partnerships continue to form seemingly with ease.
There was a little movement on offer in the wicket but the ball found a way to avoid the edge or when it took the edge not carry to hand.
Compounding on this fact was a pressure release ball bowled almost every over so the brief periods of control were lost as soon as it was gained.
Battling a strong headwind from one bowlers attempted to create chances and induce the drive and get a bit of swing, an approach that had mixed results with some wickets being created, but it came at the cost of a quick flurry of runs.
Rory and Watto helped the cause by snaring 2 wickets a piece at crucial moments but a big score from Cornwall appeared on the cards should they not remove the set number five batsmen who eventually scored a well made 100. As it played out his early patience paid dividends as he capitalised on the short boundaries and loose bowling.

Despite the infrequent strikes North Shore were still in it should they run through the tail, until the last session when an 8th wicket partnership scored rapidly and took control of the game in pretty quick time to leave Shore chasing well over 300, with an hour left on day one.
Unfortunately for Shore the day got worse as they suffered four strikes against them before the end of close leaving them reeling at 30/4. Faced with an extremely uphill battle, the Reserves will welcome back Sam Hinds fresh off some runs in Premier cricket into the line up and hope he continues his good form to give Shore a chance at chasing an unlikely victory.

Sportslink International
Premier Reserve Women
Week 1 of the competition was a home game on the scenic Domain No 4 as part of the club’s opening day extravaganza. Batting first we made a strong start with the experienced pair of Alison Hansen and Georgia Haworth our overseas player. They survived some early scares before putting on 41 when the first wicket fell, Georgia adjudged LBW. Alison, who was batting well and with a strike rate of 105 was run out in the 11th over with the score at 53. Theresa Holmes upped the run rate again when she came in scoring a quick 12 off 12 but she ran out of partners and the team was all out in the 18th over for 85.

This was always going to be a tough total to defend especially with Waitakere’s hard hitting youngster Shaiy opening. While we managed to collect three wickets via Jasmine Perry (who dismissed Areta bowled), Georgie Shanahan (dismissed Jess via a fine catch from Milly Yorke) and Georgia dismissing Hayley with a caught and bowled to claim her first wicket for NSCC, Waitakere passed the target in the 15th over.
We’d love a couple more players to either play full time or join the roster to play when they can. If this sounds like you, contact Gillian accounts@northshorecricket.co.nz
This week the team play Papatoetoe at Melville Park.

It's a Woman's World

Or at least Friday nights are!
There’s been a lot going on behind the scenes over the winter to prepare for Women’s Tonk. Getting a female CEO in Anna Bray has been a big signing, welcome on board Anna and thanks for getting involved!
This season we had a slightly formal registration form which has seen 100 women register to play social cricket this summer.  I’m not sure if I can express how cool this is!

It was fantastic on Friday night seeing the Domain starting with our youngest girls getting coached by girls who have come through the juniors, then our two U11 girls hardball teams, our U13 and U16 girls hardball teams, our Premier Reserve women’s and Takapuna Grammar 1st XI all training then the ground covered by women playing sport (Tonkand having fun.

The club was filled with chat afterwards and as usual Karen had some delicious healthy food for sale.
The women’s comp is fortnightly before Christmas with the next round on February 15th. Come and check it out! The bar is open from 4 pm.

Food's Up!.

The club kitchen will once again be selling food on Saturday evenings.
On weeks when the Premier team are away hot chips only will be available to enjoy while you have a cool beverage.
When the Premier team is at home there will be a full
dinner available. We have some new offerings over the bar this summer, come on in to check them out.
