Broadford Hall
To all TLaWC members

Please find below the names of our five Board Nominees and their responses to the three questions that we invited them to address.

Sherryn Antonopoulos

I would like to express my interest in once again being on the Board of TLaWC.

I have been a Board member for the past 2 years and believe, with the RSA coming around in February, I still have the corporate knowledge and governance experience to ensure that TLaWC is positioned well towards delivering on its Strategic Plan for the benefit of the mob.

I have also over the past 12 months completed an “Emerging Indigenous Executive Leadership Program” run out of the University of NSW.  This Certificate of Executive Management Development also provides two credits towards an MBA if I was to continue. This program has been instrumental in developing my leadership aspirations and capabilities and I look forward to being able to use my learnings and help drive/guide TLaWC in the right direction.

Matthew Shanks

My name is Matthew Shanks. I'm a descendant of the Nira-Baluk Clan and the oldest grandchild of Aunty Glenys Merry.

I have served the TLaWC  Board for two years. Over this time I have learned a lot about our history and culture, and connected with a lot of our people.
I'm excited to continue my dedication to the mob if elected to serve another term as Director.

My vision for TLaWC is to continue building towards a sustainable future that enables Taungurung people to determine our own futures.
My experience from a degree in Environmental Management and Sustainability and my work as a Natural Resource Management Policy Advisor for the Federation supporting Traditional Owners across Victoria means I can assist Taungurung to assert our rights and care for country once again, embedding our holistic country management perspectives to heal country and through that our Taungurung families.
It's been a privilege to work with the Baan Ganalina group and see the incredible outcomes this has brought. I'm committed to seeing this continue to build through the implementation of our Settlement Agreement and the establishment of our Traditional Owner Land Management Board to oversee the development of our Joint Management Plan for the parks under Taungurung title.

I believe through good governance we can ensure the Corporation can continue to provide opportunities for Taungurung people to participate in planning and decision making for Taungurung country.

Jacqui Stewart

I have been on the Board for the last two years and would like to continue to contribute in the role for the benefit of our mob.
I have the experience I've gained from serving on the Board and am committed to the development of TLaWC. For 17 years I've worked with the Koori Court, eight years on the County Court and for the last two years I've been on the Melbourne Magistrates Court. In addition, I have broad community experience.
I would like to see us owning businesses in order to create employment for our mob. I would like to see the development of the Taungurung language -- especially for our young people. And my vision is that we become self-sufficient.

Marcus Stewart

Right now is a critical time for TLaWC, with the recent signing of its Settlement Agreement and the forthcoming transition to full implementation of the Agreement.  I am very committed to ensuring that that implementation is undertaken as smoothly and effectively as possible and I would like to contribute to the work with the Board in its role of providing sound governance.

I believe I can bring a range of skills, knowledge, connections and experience to the Board.
I have a unique skillset and would hope that the members would acknowledge the leadership demonstrated in my former roles as Chairperson and then CEO of TLaWC.   I was a lead negotiator in finalising the Taungurung Recognition and Settlement Agreement and so have detailed knowledge of both the Agreement and the governance role the Board will need to play in having oversight of its implementation.

My vision is for TLaWCs continual growth and the evolution of a strong, thriving Taungurung First Nation group:
Strong in culture; strong in caring for country; with resilient and transparent governance and a strategy to build its financial base in order to increase its social investment, grow its operations and invest in social and cultural activities for the Taungurung nation.
I see these things as critical foundations for the sustainability of TLaWC.

Steve Walsh

I believe I have the experience and passion to empower our community to work together for the future of ourselves and our next generation.

I have experience as a past Board member which, together with my knowledge of governance and transparency as a Taungurung man, qualifies me for this position.
I work in government as a Aboriginal Liaison Officer currently with Department of Premier and Cabinet, while still employed with DELWP for 19 years. I can bring that knowledge and experience to Taungurung.
My vision is to see TLaWC become the Aboriginal organisation that works and supports its members and community, I see that our future is to provide benefits and activities to our mob and cultural awareness to the broader community.

At the end of the AGM Marcus Stewart, our elected TLaWC Representative on the First Peoples’ Assembly, will be doing a brief presentation on how he intends to fulfil that role.
