Trump ordered to pay $2 million as part of civil lawsuit

  • During the 2016 Trump campaign, the Trump Foundation held a fundraiser for military veterans, garnering nearly $3 million in donations. However, the money was instead dispersed to further campaign interests
  • After a civil lawsuit was filed in June 2018, a New York state judge has ordered President Trump to pay $2 million to a group of nonprofits as a part of the settlement

Las Vegas bans the homeless from sleeping on the streets

  • On Wednesday, Las Vegas city officials approved legislation that criminalizes sleeping on the streets if beds are available at shelters throughout the city. Following the 5-2 vote, the measure will be applied to Las Vegas' downtown area. Offenders will face up to 6 months in jail and a $1000 fine
  • Mayor Carolyn Goodman defended the policy, citing "the health and safety of the entire community." Others declare the policy “disgusting and embarrassing,” protesting the measure outside the Las Vegas City Council chambers

Paris migrant camps cleared by local authorities

  • Early Thursday morning, the French police cleared out two makeshift migrant tent camps in the outskirts of Paris. The operation involved almost 600 police officers, displacing an estimated 1600 migrants 
  • The move followed an earlier government announcement regarding changes to French immigration policy. These measures include new quotas and a provision to deny incoming asylum seekers access to healthcare for three months
More information: After the raid, police brought migrants to reception centers and shelters for the night. Anne Hidalgo, Paris' mayor and a vocal critic of President Macron, has assured migrants that they will be found permanent accommodation.

Netflix CEO defends decision to comply with Saudia Arabian government censors 

  • Earlier this year, Netflix sparked criticism when it removed an episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj's show Patriot Act from Saudia Arabian viewers. The episode criticized Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi investment in Silicon Valley
  • In an interview on Wednesday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings backed the decision, stating that “we’re not in the truth to power business, we’re in the entertainment business”

Security flaw found in Amazon’s Ring doorbells 

  • Researchers from Romanian security firm Bitdefender recently discovered a vulnerability in Amazon’s internet-connected, video-enabled doorbells. The auto-locks, which homeowners can control remotely, allow for the homes’ private wifi networks to be hacked into via doorbell, risking larger attacks or counter surveillance
  • Amazon began the process of fixing the flaw in all its Ring devices back in September, but only disclosed the information this week. A Ring spokesperson stated that Amazon has since rolled out an automatic security update, patching the flaw 

SCIENCE ⚗️

NASA opens moon rock sample sealed for the past 40 years

  • On Tuesday, samples from a 1972 space mission were opened for the first time ever at the Johnson Space Center in Houston as a part of NASA's Apollo Next-Generation Sample Analysis initiative (ANGSA)
  • Using technologies developed after their collection, tests will be conducted on these 40-year-old samples. These tests will serve as practice for studying future samples to be collected through the Artemis Missions
More information: The storing of samples for future generations is a customary procedure at NASA. In December 1972, astronauts from the Apollo 17 mission returned to Earth from the moon with samples of rock, regolith, and soil which were left untouched until this year.
