Traffic Calming News

A couple years ago the residents of Elfreda Blvd. petitioned and received approval to drop the speed limit on their street from 50 km/hr to 40 km/hr. A survey is planned for the New Year to look at additional speed reduction strategies including further speed reduction, stop signs and traffic calming.
After the survey the plan is to approach the local councillor to implement a plan supported by the majority of residents. If you would like to help with canvassing the survey please contact info@danforthgardens.ca.

There was also a meeting with the local councillor to deal with traffic, stop sign violations and speeding in front of Danforth Gardens Public School. The latest from the councillor is that senior staff have reviewed the area in front of the school, and the parking/stopping bylaws are as restrictive as currently possible, and clearly posted. The councillor’s office has recommended reaching out to Green Communities Canada. Green Communities is an independent agency. which conducts Traffic Safety Audits for schools and helps school communities create a plan to deal with the issues.

Natural Ice Rink

DGNA met with Councillor Crawford and City of Toronto Staff in the fall of 2019 to follow up on getting a winterized tap at Oates Park for a natural ice rink. City Staff agreed to have a closer look at the cost and feasibility of a natural ice rink there. Although, the cost may have been manageable, it turns out that the grading on the soccer field is too severe to build an ice rink on. There are no other areas that are flat enough at Oates Park to create a rink so at this point we are dropping this initiative.

If anyone is aware of another location on City of Toronto property in our neighbourhood that might be suitable, please contact info@danforthgardens.ca.

Sports & Theater Club

Our Indoor Multi-sport Club is in the middle of our second session. We had a great fall group and the winter club is full and will be running to the end of February. The plan is to follow the indoor sports club with a 4 week Theater Sports series in March. This is an improv drama/comedy program similar to “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” It is great for building drama, literacy, storytelling and social skills as well as confidence and self esteem. The program is free but we are asking for a $20.00 – $30.00 donation to cover the cost of the gym rental. Contact info@danforthgardens.ca to register.

Stay tuned for the 2020 Spring Outdoor Soccer and Summer Baseball registration!

Pollinate TO Grant

The DGNA received a grant for $5,000 to plant pollinator gardens in our neighbourhood to support bees, butterflies and insects. There will be six new gardens in our neighbourhood this spring: four in the front yards of our neighbours, one at Danforth Gardens Public School and one will be at Oates Park. If you would like to help prepare and plant the gardens at Oates Park this spring, or want more information about planting your own pollinator garden, please email info@danforthgardens.ca.

A Natural Playground at Danforth Gardens

In 2019 a Nature Study Area was created on Danforth Gardens Public School Grounds with the help of the DGNA. Local families are using the Nature Study Area as an additional play area and we would like to do more. We would like to propose a natural playground in the area next to the Nature Study Area to the school. If they are amenable, then we could consider starting a fundraising campaign to make the project happen. If you like this idea or want to get involved please contact info@danforthgardens.ca.

Library Renovations Update

Albert Campbell Public Library renovations have begun. The temporary library project at Birchmount Plaza has been delayed to zoning Issues that required a variance approval that has now been acquired. Work on renovating the former fish and chip shop began in late December/early January but ran into some unexpected construction complications. The renovation is now underway and is expected to be completed sometime in April. The contact at the Toronto Public Library is Moe Hosseini-Ara, Director, Branch Operations & Customer Experience, Toronto Public Library.

TD Park People Grant

We will be applying for the TD Parks People Grant again. We were unsuccessful last year and are optimistic of our chances this year. The grant is for $2,000.00 to run 3 community events in local parks between April and November. We plan to submit the Bike Festival, the Fall Community Fair and a Community Solstice Celebration. If you are experienced in writing grant proposals or want to help with any of these events contact info@danforthgardens.ca
