Violent Salt brings together contemporary artists from across Australia representing diverse cultural heritage. The exhibition reflects on the experiences of the marginalised, the underrepresented and the silenced.

Featuring the work of Abdul Abdullah (NSW), Vernon Ah Kee (QLD), Richard Bell (QLD), Daniel Boyd (NSW), Megan Cope (QLD), Karla Dickens (NSW), S.J. Norman (VIC), Yhonnie Scarce (VIC/SA) and Jemima Wyman (QLD).

This inspiring touring exhibition showcases the work of 33 Artel artists, some of whom possess complex and profound disabilities. Artel, CPL’s (Choice, Passion, Life) creative industries studio supports the development of a positive and participatory cultural identity for people with profound and complex disabilities.

An Artspace Mackay photographic exhibition delivered in partnership with the Mackay and District Australian South Sea Islander Association (MADASSIA), which explores how the art of tattooing has been embraced by local Australian South Sea Islanders as a means of cultural connection to, and affirmation of, their South Sea Islander heritage. Sacred Ink investigates the stories of their tattoos and how they intersect with themes of family, heritage and identity.

BMA Kidspace


Tuesdays > November 19 / December 10, 10am – 2pm (Musical entertainment noon - 1pm)  

Join local artists and performers for creative art activities designed for toddlers and their adults. BMA Kidspace, Artspace Mackay’s ever popular toddler’s program, gives children under five a chance to explore and have fun with art in a climate of co-operative learning. The program includes free artist-run workshops from 10am to 2pm and live musical entertainment for kids from noon to 1pm. Bring your children along for a fun day of art-making, singing and dancing. Proudly presented by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance and Mackay Regional Council.

Conversations with Art

Fridays > November 15 / December 20, 1pm – 2.30pm, Artspace Mackay

An enjoyable opportunity to look and talk about art! Held on the third Friday of each month, Conversations with Art is held in the Artspace Workshop Room. It’s a free and enjoyable discussion led by Artspace staff as we look at images of traditional and contemporary artworks from gallery and museum collections from around the world.

Artist talk with artist Vernon Ahkee

Thursday, November 21, 6pm
Artspace Mackay

Meet artist Vernon Ahkee at Artspace Mackay as he talks about his practice and his latest work. Vernon Ah Kee’s conceptual text pieces, videos, photographs and drawings form a critique of Australian popular culture from the perspective of the Aboriginal experience of contemporary life. He particularly explores the dichotomy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal societies and cultures. This informative evening includes refreshments and will provide opportunities for questions and conversation. Vernon’s new work features in Violent Salt, an Artspace Mackay touring exhibition that reflects on the experiences of the marginalised, the underrepresented and the silenced, on show at Artspace until November 24.

Book launch, Early Morning Inspiration by artist David Conway

Join local artist David Conway on the International Day for People with a Disability as we officially launch his book of original artworks and quotes. Early Morning Inspiration is a compilation of inspiring quotes and artwork that quietly lifts your mood and helps you to see the beauty in the struggles so many of us experience daily.
