Top Two Strategies for Enrolments in 2019

  1. In some states, especially Victoria, the long term balance of single gender schools to co-ed school has been changing. 30 – 40 years ago, the APS and AGS had around 16 single sex boys schools in Melbourne, and now there are only 5 that are purely a boys school. The pressure has come on single sex girls schools as they compete for students against the often larger co-ed schools like Carey, Haileybury and Ivanhoe Grammar. Single sex girls schools need to stress the advantages they see of their approach to education rather than the co-ed approach about making boys and girls more compatible in their teenage years.

We have had one case we can see where Kilvington has gone from a single sex girls school to a co-ed school taking on boys as well. Is this the future for more of the single sex girl’s schools as they compete with the often larger facilities and opportunities of the co-ed schools? This is discussed more at

  2. The ABS has finally released information on population forecasts for 2017 – 2032 at SA2 level. This information tells us their expectation Australia wide by each year, and for male / female by age. This allows us to group age cohorts to give what are the expectations of primary and secondary school pupil numbers in any area into the future up to 2032. An example would be in how an area like Hoppers Crossing / Truganina is growing compared to an area like Mill Park which is reducing in student potential purely as the population ages, the kids finish school and move out, and the parents are now empty nesters. It is very important to understand what the future potential of an area looks like if you are counting on students coming from those suburbs.

Top Three Strategies for Online Presence in 2019

After presenting at advancement professional conferences in Victoria and Queensland in 2019, I would like to suggest that it is time for all schools in Australia to:
  1. Update the school's entire Google My Business presence - this means updating your Google Maps information, claiming the Google My Business Location (if you haven't already), installing the Google My Business App on the school mobile phone so that queries can be answered directly from a Google Search and developing a Google Reviews request strategy now that direct Google Review links are available. 2. Ensuring that 80% of students create a LinkedIn Profile before leaving the school (preferably during Year 11) and then add in the details of their schooling so that they can be automatically added to the school's alumni list on LinkedIn. If the school only has a LinkedIn Company Profile, it can be upgraded to a School Profile so that the alumni feature will work at https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/ask/up-anup

  3. Complete an online presence audit and ensure that the school has direct access, control and management of all of the school's official social media accounts with standardised descriptions, logos, backgrounds, links etc and ensure that all profiles that can be verified and receive a blue tick are actually verified so that the public can identify the 'official' properties. Social Media platforms update the fields available on their accounts on a regular basis so these should all be reviewed at least every six months.
