“Show us the Way, O Lord”

By Elaine White

“The only wrong action is inaction.” Jemar Tisby, The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism.

Reading and discussing The Color of Compromise has been a difficult journey for me. The book has come to me at a time in my life when I understand that we are at a moment of truth in our nation.  Racism is not decreasing, and we have to decide if we are going to stand against it or if we are going to choose to be complicit—a choice American Christianity has faced multiple times.  We often speak of standing on the shoulders of those who have lived before us.  It was an emotional blow for me to realize that I stand on the shoulders of white supremacists.  I’ve never worn a white hood or stood behind a burning cross, but I have benefitted from the views those people hold and the policies and attitudes that exist because of white superiority.  I am not discriminated against when it’s time for me to find a place to live, when I need to apply for a loan, when I commit some minor offense.  I have never been racially profiled.  I walk through town expecting to be seen, respected, and protected.  And I don’t understand how it feels to not have these privileges.  And here’s the worst part—I haven’t wanted to understand because it makes me uncomfortable and confused.  It overwhelms me and frightens me to think of what needs to be done and what it might cost.

Through our study of The Color of Compromise, I have realized that my fears and avoidance have been repeated over the past centuries, not just in our homes and communities but also in our churches.  Multiple times Christians have had the opportunity to stand against racism and to walk alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ, but we have chosen to look away and ignore Christ’s command to “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Here is our moment of truth—are we going to sit and do nothing (That’s being complicit!), or are we going to say, “Show us the way, O Lord”? Reading The Color of Compromise is just one point in a long process.  In the months ahead, we will be considering the next step in an ongoing journey to learn how we can be the hands and feet of God in our racially divided world. We will read deeply, ask difficult questions, struggle together, and grow in the love of our Lord and the love of our brothers and sisters. I hope you will join us.

Panera Bread Men's Breakfast
Join the men for breakfast at Panera (Baylor) this upcoming Monday, November 11th, at 6:45am, for a time of fellowship and study.
Coordinating Council Monthly Meeting
Coordinating Council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 12:15 this Sunday, November 10 in the Fellowship Hall. Last month we had a wonderful discussion about the strengths and needs of Sunday School at Calvary and shared ideas for future growth. In addition, John Hunt and Jennifer Low brought an informative briefing from the Mission’s retreat, and we discussed some of Calvary’s core values related to our missional engagement in our community and world. This month’s meeting will include the discussion and consideration of the 2020 Ministry Action Budget, as well as discussion around Wednesday Night Meals and the formation of a Church Information/Technology team.  Read the agenda here:  11/10/19 Agenda
Living Generously
Each day during the month of November, we are challenging the Calvary family to live generously. There are calendars available in the Welcome Center (designed for us by the creative and talented Katie Crews) that will help us plan out daily acts of generosity. There will also be creative worship experiences each week to challenge and inspire us in living generously. We also want to hear from you throughout this month. How have you experienced God through giving or receiving generosity? You’re welcome to write or draw about that moment on cards that will be in your pews and place them in the offering plate as an act of worship. Or, you can share your stories online with us using this link (http://bit.ly/2PutLu6). We will be collecting your stories of generosity (anonymously) and sharing them with Calvary throughout this worship series.
Financial Giving Statements
This fall, Calvary has been updating our database of church information. This week, we e-mailed or mailed you an updated record of your 2019 financial giving to Calvary through September 30, along with the contact information we have for you in our records. Please look over this statement to verify that this information is correct, including your mailing address. If any changes need to be made, please contact Phil Sitton at psitton@cbcwaco.net. If you did not receive a statement and believe you should have, please also let Phil know. As we begin the final two months of the year, we also hope you will take time to consider how you might give to what God is doing at Calvary between now and the end of the year. Our mission and ministry together at 18th and Bosque would not be possible without your faithful support. Thank you for your generous giving!
Wednesday Night Meal
Hey Calvary family, join us for dinner on Wednesday, November 13th at 5 p.m. We'll have sandwiches and

The Bradleys would like to offer their continued gratitude for the many ways that the Calvary family is walking alongside them through this difficult season. Thank you for your prayers, your messages, and your outpouring of love and support. To receive the most up-to-date information on how the Bradleys are doing, please follow along at https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/brendabradley2. You can also sign up to receive emails every time they post. Thank you for being the family of God in this place for them in so many important ways in this journey.

Box Tops for West Avenue Elementary!
Box Tops for Education are found on hundreds of products from cereal and snacks to cleaning supplies and office supplies (https://www.boxtops4education.com). Each Box Top is worth $.10 each for a participating school. West Avenue collects and redeems Box Tops, and we have committed to helping them collect this school year. Simply clip the Box Top from participating products and save in a Ziploc bag or on a collection sheet printed from the website. Turn your Box Tops in to the collection box at Calvary in the Welcome Center. Thanks for helping West Avenue this year!
Extended Care – Need All Hands on Deck!
We are so excited that Calvary’s children’s ministry is growing! More children also means that we need more volunteers for Extended Care for our infants and Pre-K children during worship. We currently have 19 volunteers who faithfully serve in Extended Care once every 5-6 weeks. However, the dream of the children’s ministry is to have so many volunteers that everyone only serves once a quarter (every 3 months). We are asking for 40 more people from the Calvary family to volunteer for Extended Care. That means we need people of all ages and stages of life, men and women, involved in this important ministry. Please consider giving one Sunday a quarter to love and serve Calvary's children and families. We are so grateful to those who are already serving and hope to welcome many more.

Contributing Financially to Calvary
Each week, we present our offerings as an act of worship. However, many of us pay for the majority of our expenses online or through an automatic-withdraw from our bank accounts, and each month when we pay our expenses, we can present an offering to God in these ways too. You can give to Calvary online at http://cbcwaco.net/give-to-calvary, but please note that 1-2% of your gift will go toward transaction fees. If you would like to set up an automatic withdrawal from your bank account, which has no transaction fees, please contact Phil Sitton at psitton@cbcwaco.net
