WIIT Hosts Kelly Ann Shaw at Oct. 28 Event
On October 28, WIIT was honored to host Kelly Ann Shaw, former Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs and NEC Deputy Director, for an insightful and enaging discussion on The Administration’s Trade Agenda, Experiences at the G7 and G20 and the opportunities for women in trade and international negotiations. With the kind hosting, and excellent moderating skills of Kellie Meiman Hock of McLarty Associations, the discussion ranged around the world, and
particularly highlighting opportunities in the current and future trade agenda. WIIT was honored to be able to present Kelly Ann’s WIIT Government Service Award, in person, recognizing over a decade of dedicated government service.
WIIT Hosts Panel at the Organization of Women in International Trade’s Annual Conference in Tampa
On October 24, WIIT hosted a panel titled “Reading the Tea Leaves: Trade in 2020” at the Organization of Women in International Trade’s Annual Conference in Tampa. CompTIA’s Maggie Henkin moderated the panel with Yuri Unno, President of WIIT, Lisa Gelsomino of Avalon Risk Management, and Susan Harper of the Canadian Consulate. The panel delved into pressing trade policy topics such as Section 232, the status of USMCA, and Customs and Boarder Patrol’s 21st Century Framework.
The conference, hosted by OWIT’s local Tampa Bay Chapter with the theme of “Year of the Women”, showcased a variety of successful women working in trade across the United States, Canada, and Africa. Dr. Patti Fletcher, a Strategy Coach for PSDNetwork and author of Disrupters: Success Strategies from Women Who Break the Mold, was the keynote speaker where she gave tips on how to succeed in a male-dominated work environment.
The following day was the OWIT Board Meeting where Maggie Henkin gave a best practices lecture on how to build robust programming for individual OWIT Chapters. The smaller OWIT Chapters expressed their gratitude from learning from the WIIT Chapter. For decades, there was a bipartisan consensus in the United States that economic engagement with the emerging economies of Asia, particularly China, was mutually beneficial.
But that consensus has frayed. Politicians as diverse as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and President Donald Trump have argued that previous trade deals damaged the U.S. economy and the American worker. And while Trump's trade war with China is far from universally popular, even his critics acknowledge that the U.S. will have to fundamentally rethink its relationship with the world's second-largest economy.
So why have perceptions about trade changed? And where is this all leading?
In this episode of the newly relaunched podcast Asia In-Depth, Asia Society Executive Vice President Tom Nagorski speaks with Asia Society Policy Institute Vice President Wendy Cutler, who previously served as a U.S. trade negotiator in four administrations, about how the politics of trade have shifted during her career and what direction U.S. trade policy may head in as we enter the third decade of the 21st century.
Asia Society is seeking a Senior Program Officer. The Senior Program Officer coordinates and manages trade and economic initiatives, including task forces, policy commissions, and Track II dialogues carried out by the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI), an independent, non- partisan, global think/do tank focused on tackling the major policy challenges confronting the Asia-Pacific in security, prosperity, sustainability, and the development of common norms and values for the region. He/she also coordinates ASPI’s public events and private meetings/roundtables in Washington, D.C.
