Scripture Readings for this Sunday:

Job 19: 23-27a
Psalm 17: 1-9
2 Thessalonians 2: 1- 5, 13-17

This Sunday in our gospel reading we encounter a group called the Sadducees who want to trap and embarrass Jesus. They inquire about a hypothetical situation where a woman is married to seven brothers, which then prompts this question: “In the resurrection, to whom shall she be married, for all seven had her as his wife?”

We don’t have the same question, but we do have many questions regarding life after death. For instance: “Will I know my loved ones after death? Do I immediately go to live with God, or do I wait until the Day of Judgment? Do I have to spend an eternity playing a harp or listening to Pastor’s David’s sermons – provided he isn’t the guest preacher or the punishment to be endured in hell?”

We don’t have a blueprint, or a plan, or a formula for life beyond the grave. The only clue we have is Jesus, the one who gives us life and love in every valley of death. We travel with Jesus, and we trust him, because Jesus is the source and the content of our hope. Even though Jesus doesn’t show us every little detail of the way it’s going to be, he sends us out with a promise – the promise of resurrection – and not even death will destroy this promise and our relationship with Jesus based on love and grace. Please join us in worship as we celebrate our resurrection hope each Sunday.

This Sunday at our 10:00 a.m. worship we will thankfully receive into membership Mark Chuakay and his two children, Micah Chuakay-Gaspar and Daniel Chuakay-Gaspar. Mark is married to David Gaspar, and they’ve been attending Calvary for several weeks. May we be mutually blessed and enriched as we grow together as brothers and sisters and disciples of Jesus Christ.
