Bend Winter Shelter Update:
The availability of warming shelter in Bend will be severely restricted this winter unless we can find an adequate location tor up to 100 shelter beds. The shortage is due to both increased demand and loss of previous shelter space. The HLC has been actively working with the City of Bend and service providers to identify a suitable space, but at this time there is no emergency winter shelter in Bend. For more information, please reach out to info@cohomeless.org.

Please take a moment to read about our latest updates:

  • Our team has grown with the addition of  Emily Beck and Caitlin Smith, who came to us through Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest/AmeriCorps. They will be doing a year of service with Thrive Central Oregon as Community Outreach Specialists at our Bend walk-in sites.

  • We’ve expanded services! We have a new walk-in site available at Mission Church (61303 S Hwy 97, Bend) with two TCO staff there from 10-1 on Tuesday’s. Mission Church is offering shower/laundry/clothing services to the community, as well as partnering with Mosaic Medical and Bend Treatment Center to provide services. Homeless Doesn't Mean Voiceless: Vote!
Just because someone lacks a fixed address doesn't mean they shouldn't exercise their right to vote. If you work with people experiencing homelessness, here's a list from Deschutes County Elections Office about what people need to have or be in order to vote.

- US Citizen
- 16 years of age to register, ballot mailed at 18
- Residential address – that can be a location too, but we need a good description. Example, 3rd Street and Franklin Ave Safeway Store Parking Lot
- Mailing address – they can even use the Deschutes County Clerk’s office or General Delivery, City, State, Zip
- Signature
- Date of birth
- If registering for the first time in Oregon, they’ll need to complete the ID portion of the attached card too
- If they don’t choose a party they will be assigned “’NAV’ = non-affiliated voter”

Fall Lecture: SLO Growth
A Peer City Conversation with San Luis Obispo Architect, Jim Duffy

Presented by Taylor NW

San Luis Obispo and Bend share many similarities. Both are lifestyle towns that have faced enormous growth and demands for housing in the last few years. Both have accredited universities and vibrant historic districts. And while SLO is about half the size of Bend, that doesn’t mean they haven’t had challenges related to growth.

Jim Duffy of Ten Over Studio is located in SLO and will discuss the consequences his city has faced due to limiting growth and what Bend can potentially learn as we grapple with increased density, traffic and infrastructure limitations.

Tuesday, Nov 5th, 6:30-8pm (doors at 6)
Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Helens Hall
231 NW Idaho Ave. Bend

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, this event is free to the public. Seating is limited. Details at Building a Better Bend.

Redmond to Welcome More Affordable Housing

Elizabeth Gabriel for KLCC, October 28, 2019

'The Red Canyon Redmond apartment community will contain 67 units in Redmond and 24 units in Madras. The property will house individuals and families with household incomes at least 30%-60% less than the area median income.

Housing Works Executive Director David Brandt says about one-fourth of Redmond households make $25,000 or less a year. He says these buildings should help the growing need for affordable housing in the community.' Continue reading.

Recommended reading: Oregon Community Foundation's report 'Homelessness in Oregon: A Review of Trends, Causes, and Policy Options' was published in March and is worth your time if you aren't already familiar.

Two important highlights: 'The report shows that Oregon has a disproportionately large population of homeless people when compared to other states: while Oregon’s population represents 1.3% of the total U.S. population, Oregon’s homeless population represents 2.6% of the total U.S. homeless population.

The report suggests that the state’s homelessness and housing dilemmas are the result of two converging crises. First, an inadequate housing supply and rising rents that is leaving tens of thousands of Oregon children and families at risk of becoming homeless, and second, the persistence of a smaller population of chronically homeless people in need of intensive social services as well as specialized housing.' Continue reading.

Thanks for reading! Next issue will be out on Tuesday, November 18th.
