We're ready to celebrate all our great parks! Parks Week will run from 7 to 15 March with a wide range of activities designed to encourage residents to enjoy their neighbourhood parks and open recreation spaces. Activities offered in parks across the Region will include fitness classes for adults and kids, walking groups, park runs and much more.

Parks and open spaces are a valuable resource in our Region and help support  physical and mental wellbeing through healthy and active lifestyles. Our parks also provide environmental benefits to our Region, and build more connected communities by providing places where people come together for leisure.

Parks Week is celebrated throughout Australia and New Zealand as a combined initiative of New Zealand Recreation Association and Parks and Leisure Australia.

Sport, Active Recreation & Healthy Living Plan 2019-26 Update

Council is committed to the health and wellbeing of the people of the Toowoomba Region, endorsing the Sport, Active Recreation & Healthy Living (SARHL) Plan in December 2019.

The SARHL Plan sets out the region’s vision, goals and over 200 actions on sport, active recreation and healthy living from 2019 to 2026, complementing and adding to council existing actions (such as The CHANGE Project) to further encourage and support the health and wellbeing of our community.

The SARHL Plan is the accumulation of extensive research, review of the evidence-base, and community consultation activities undertaken over 2018 to 2019 to ensure the Plan responds to existing and emerging identified community needs and participation trends.

The community was a major contributor to the development of the SARHL Plan with more than 1000 people having their say by completing surveys, attending workshops, focus groups or meetings.  Thank you to everyone who provided input and feedback to support to development of the Plan.

Next steps involve developing an implementation plan, which will be released mid-2020.  To view the full SARHL Plan go to yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/sarhl.

For more information about the SARHL Plan please visit the yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/SARHL, call Council on 131 872 or email yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au.

The Queensland Government provided $60,000 to Toowoomba Regional Council to develop the Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living (SARHL) Plan 2019-26 to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.

Toowoomba & Locker Valley Escarpment Mountain Bike Masterplan 2019-26 Update

Toowoomba Regional Council, in collaboration with the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and with support from the Queensland Government, has developed a master plan to guide the future of mountain biking along the Range escarpment. The master plan is a short-to-medium term document that identifies opportunities to create new and improve existing trails, and develop supportive infrastructure to support mountain biking by residents, visitors and tourists along the escarpment in future.

Key recommendations include developing an additional 68.4kms of mountain bike trails (24 new trails) in Jubilee and Redwood Parks, along with a primary access node (and event hosting space) at the Bridge Street Quarry site. Implementation of the master plan will enable Toowoomba to become a nationally significant mountain biking destination.

Council undertook a significant review of trail options and consultation when developing the master plan to ensure community needs and participation trends were identified and responded to. The feedback survey received nearly 400 responses, most in favour of the plan, and close to 50 people attended community workshops. Striking a good balance between recreational and environmental needs was prioritised during this process given the significance and importance of the escarpment bushland parks.

The next step involves undertaking an Environmental Assessment of Redwood Park, endeavoured to commence in Spring 2020.  To view the full Master Plan go to yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/mountain-bike-mp.

For more information please phone 131 872 or visit yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/mountain-bike-mp or email yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au.

The Queensland Government provided $25,000 to Toowoomba Regional Council to develop the Toowoomba & Lockyer Valley Escarpment Mountain Bike Master Plan 2019-26 to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.

Sporting Field Closures

Toowoomba and Highfields
Sporting fields are closed due to wet weather. We have suspended all training and fixtures at sporting fields we operate until further notice. The venues are closed for safety reasons, to protect people playing sport from possible injury and to protect playing surfaces from potential damage.

The decision to close a field is not taken lightly. The responsible officer takes into consideration the soil structure, drainage, how far into the season we are and how the field will stand up under play if they are to remain open. All sporting clubs are considered at the time of closure however, we cannot be held responsible for any loss of competition or training days.

If a field has been closed no activities are to be undertaken until such time the field is reopened.

For the most up to date information on field closure status, please visit our Sport and Recreation webpage.

Cressbrook dam closed to water-based recreation activities

Cressbrook Dam has been closed to water-based recreation activities until further notice.
Council officers had detected an outbreak of cyanobacteria (blue green algae), which has meant Council had closed the facility to water-based recreation activities, fishing and boating, as a safety precaution.

Council will conduct its regular testing regime to determine when the dam can re-open for regular water-based recreation pursuits. The cyanobacteria represent no risk to drinking water supplies as they are removed by the water treatment and disinfection process.

Recreational activities are unaffected at Cooby Dam and Perseverance Dam.

To view activities open or closed at the dams, please visit www.tr.qld.gov.au/damstatus

Have your say on our Parks

Toowoomba Regional Council is inviting the community to have their say on draft concept designs for Emmerson Park, the Toowoomba Waterbird Habitat and Thiess Park.

The draft concept designs aim to improve recreational facilities in these parks,  including improvements to several facilities such as playgrounds, landscaping, pathways and picnic areas.

In September and October last year, Council invited the community to have a say about the use of each park and what can be improved. Council is seeking comment on the draft concept design we developed through community feedback.

The draft concept designs will be available at yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au and in hard copy at our customer service centres from Wednesday 12 February.

You can share your feedback from Wednesday 12 to Saturday 29 February by completing a survey on our website. Hard copy surveys will also be available at customer service centres.

To find out more, please contact Council by calling 131 872 or emailing yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au.

Do you know a young athlete who needs help with travel costs?
Young athletes can sometimes face barriers to fulfilling their athletic potential, such as distance, cost and time constraints. From January 2020, the Emerging Athlete Pathways program includes a trial of pre-event payments, further assisting talented young athletes on their pathway to elite success.

This means eligible Queensland athletes and officials who are under the age of 18 and need to travel at least 250km one way to their event, may be able to apply for a travel subsidy before they compete. Athletes and officials such as coaches, referees and scorers can apply for $200 for a state or state school event, $400 for a national or national school event, or $600 for an international event.

To find out more about the program and the application process, visit qld.gov.au/emergingathletepathways. You can also contact your local Sport and Recreation office or phone 13 QGOV (13 74 68) for more information.
