Maximizing Minimal Motivation:
Strategies to Get Past the Hand and into Your Teen's Head
with Rick Smith, Ed.D

For chronically distracted teenagers, consequences and criticism tend to damage relationships and inevitably lose their impact.  Goals, behaviour contracts, rewards etc. seem to fade just as quickly.  So what works best?

At this Roundtable discussion, Rick will highlight the strategies that families have found the most effective in enabling teens to make better decisions, use their time more effectively, and manage the intense emotions of adolescence.  This discussion will stay grounded in Science of Social Connection, which emphasizes the importance of a caring, interpersonal relationship as a prerequisite for adolescent well-being.

Key points will include:

  • The significance of “mattering” for developing independence and maturity.
  • Tools for identifying and developing their interests.
  • The importance of giving a teenager feedback without demotivating them for trying.
This Roundtable is appropriate for parents of both children and teens. Educators are welcome.

This is a great chance to hear from a respected professional, share your own experiences with other parents, talk about support strategies, and explore your personal questions in greater depth.
