Musings from a WTWS Board Member – Nathalie Kelley

Recently, as I was using up valuable time, scrolling through Instagram, I saw this and wanted to share it with you. (credit @NatalieRBacon)

As an instructor, I hear these statements all the time,
"I can't paint."
"I can't even draw a straight line."
"I don't even know where to start."

Oddly enough, and I think you know this, NO ONE is born with a paint brush in their hand. Everyone starts as a beginner.
You just have to
TRY!
Just begin! I started watercolor with a student palette and cheap paper.
      It's not a masterpiece???
TRY AGAIN.
       Remember, it's only paper! Right?
TRY ONE MORE TIME!
You and your paints and brushes are getting to know each other.
Who knows? You might end up being good friends.
TRY DIFFERENTLY
Use a different brush or colors that you have never used before.
         Go outside and paint.
TRY AGAIN THE NEXT DAY
          Don't give up!
TRY AND ASK SOMEONE FOR HELP
I have found that most artists are generous with their suggestions
          and assistance
TRY TO GUESS WHAT IS NOT WORKING
You can't paint the way I paint? That's okay!
You don't love to paint landscapes or flowers or realism.
What do you love to paint?  Find your style and your color palette.
TRY AND LEARN FROM SOMEONE ELSE
Watch a demo. Take a class. Go to a workshop or weekend art retreat.
TRY AGAIN UNTIL YOU SUCCEED
If this is something your really want to do, just don't give up.

I have used this illustration as it applies to art but, this could be used for just about any dream or idea that you are pursuing.

I hope that little article has inspired you to

TRY!!!

Blessings, Nathalie

NOVEMBER GUEST ARTIST
MARTHA HUNNICUTT

Marketing and Selling Art in the 21st Century
Program for November 17th
The goal of this program is to present marketing ideas and selling methods to help artists market and sell their artwork. Business markets are evolving with technology advancements, which are driving the markets.  The program will cover some of these advancements and demonstrate ways that artists can take advantage of these opportunities to market and sell their artwork in today’s competitive art market.

Art has played a central part in Martha’s life from music to painting. She is a self-taught artist with no formal training in the visual arts apart from workshops in pastel, watermedia, and plein air painting. Her desire to capture a moment, a place, or an animal with art has only grown over the years. She is a bird lover, especially exotic birds. Presently, she and her husband have rescued and given forever homes to three of these beautiful creatures. The three birds have become her favorite sitters as subjects of her paintings. Martha enjoys their amusing behaviors, expressions, and painting the vivid colors associated with tropical birds.

Martha is a native Texan from Levelland. She graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration from Eastern New Mexico University. Martha has over a decade of experience in sales management and free-lance graphic design. Serving as the former president of the Muleshoe Art Association, she created the publications and marketing materials to expand the reach of the local art association. She believes in advancing art in community and beyond by working with creatives. She has always had a passion for helping people and organizations realize their aspirations.

Today, Martha is on a new art journey to further art appreciation through her online gallery business. The gallery exclusively supports Texas area artists. Marketing art today has taken on new opportunities for the artists with the advancements of technology, from email, text messaging, Facebook, personal websites and now virtual/augmented reality. Most importantly, these new advancements are all supported by the great invention of the smartphone, which we all depend on today!

Going forward, she hopes to introduce artists and their artwork in both private and public places using the advancements of technology to create an emotional connection, allowing the consumer to visualize artwork in their own space.

Cecilia,
I cannot even begin to say how grateful I was at being selected as one of the teacher recipients of the grant from the Community Foundation of West Texas and the WTWS.  I was all in at the word watercolor, but it was the  warm welcome from the members of the watercolor society that enriched my experience further.    I can not say enough about the incredible Iain Stewart who changed my life and the way I view watercolor painting, how he lifted up the work in sketchbooks and encouraged more and more drawing.  HIs expertise during this week was incredible.   He made me want to paint in watercolor again.

I teach at Lubbock High School and I teach the International Baccalaureate curriculum for Visual Arts for the last 7 years.  My students were so excited when I returned they wanted me to tell them all about my painting workshop.  I have some very talented students in that program and I am sure I can share with them  some of the many experiences I had during the week.  Lubbock High School is a historical building from the 1930's with great architecture and this is just Monday and we were outside drawing the corners, stairs and the bell tower of the old building.  The information I shared about the sketchbook and what importance it plays in the journey of an artist is something that the IB curriculum is known for, recording the journey, not only drawings but artists and values and media exploration. It is what we did each day in Iain classes.    It was a week of pure bliss for me, in fact my husband said I haven't seen you this excited since your journeys to Junction Texas for graduate school.

So thank you all from the bottom of my heart, and my students will be encouraged and glean from this workshop.  They all want to learn to  paint like I did.
I am so glad I responded to Nealy Holley's call to enter for the scholarship.  I speak for myself but I know Art teachers need more than most to have their own creative moments and the time to be part of
something that fills our spirit.

How to get more art teachers to enter for the scholarship?  this was the first I heard of it.  And of course I checked with my principal to see if I would be allowed to win.
Maybe that is what is holding others back from applying.  I think that now we have an Art Director in our district who keeps all of us visual artists up to date on the latest, you may have many more apply for future workshops.

Again Thank You for energizing my creative spirit, for the welcome, for the supplies for the week, for the delicious food and snacks and Coffee provided. It was a journey that will forever be in my heart.
and I would like to say that I will more than likely be joining your society if allowed.  So if you could forward the necessary information I need to sign up.  I will be seeing you again.

All the best,

Cindy Peanick

Dear West Texas Watercolor Society,

Thank you so much for the honor of awarding me a grant to attend the Iain Stewart Watercolor Workshop on October 7th-10th, 2019. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade art in Shallowater, TX, and the knowledge and experience I gained will not only allow me to become a better teacher, but will also help me personally as I continue to improve my artistic skills.

I believe ongoing education is vital to any professional, but this workshop offered quality instruction and new skills I am able take to my students as well as integrate into my personal artwork. Students seeing their teachers learning new skills and sharing that knowledge inspires and motivates them to continue pursuing their interests outside of school.

Quality professional development in the creative arts is difficult to come by which makes your workshop offering even more valuable and greatly needed in the west Texas area. As educators we have access to academic focused workshops through the Educational Service Center, but nothing like this workshop has ever been offered. I value being able to meet people from the community that value the creative arts, and pursue ongoing education in the arts while helping others to do the same.

Thank you again for the wonderful opportunity. It was much enjoyed and greatly appreciated. I look forward to learning more about your future offerings.

Sincerely,

Kristy Harrist
