Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

This is called a CTA. Forward this email to friends and tell them to click on this link to subscribe.

Question: How many of you would donate to a Kickstarter campaign to send me to as many conferences as possible in my quest to find you great content? I just need about 6 of you to select the $15,000 'Make Paul an Extrovert' level to make it happen.

To all of you that I met in person for the first time OR those who I got to reconnect with at Third Coast, it was a blast.

Note to bonehead self: Do NOT take the 6am flight back home ever again.

November Ain't Just For Mustaches

For my four newsletters in November, I’m having some fun with my friend Lauren Passell, the writer of Podcast The Newsletter. As lovers of podcasts, we are entrusting our friends at the Bello Collective to recommend something to us, for each of us to review. Will they come through for us?

For Week 1, Skye Pillsbury, the writer of the Inside Podcasting newsletter and now seasoned podcast host, has offered up Desert Oracle’s ‘Travel Options for the Collapse.’

As someone that is in the know about everything in the podcast industry, Skye oddly had trouble giving us a recommendation. But after a few back and forth DM’s, she dropped this rather unique episode upon us.

Here's a snippet of Lauren's review:

"Each story is mysterious and ominous. The intent, I think, is to make the listener feel out of place. But the more I listened, the more I wanted to hear more and understand what was happening to me! 'Travel Options for the Collapse' lets us picture the desert after an apocalypse."

But don't stop there. Learn how we agree/disagree on this episode. Read the rest of Lauren's review and while you’re over there, subscribe to her amazingly comprehensive newsletter.

After reading her review, you can read my full review.

The Skimmer’s Hook: The westernmost province in Canada was helping with the war on drugs. Until.

Listen if you like: Drugs, Activism, Award Winners

One of the winners at the Third Coast Festival this year was not surprisingly, not me. Maybe if I ever got off my arse and made something, I would have a shot. Luckily, there are already plenty of people making important audio and I can talk about them.

One of this year’s award-winning episodes is from Crackdown - a podcast about the drug war. The (non-gimmicky) hook is that drug users cover it as war correspondents.

As an extremely fortunate person that has never been addicted to any drugs, this whole episode was an eye-opener. I have heard of Methadone but I didn’t know what it was. (I’m beginning to realize this newsletter is me telling you how ignorant I am every week.) I certainly had no idea what Methadose was. So, I had no idea of the decision that British Columbia made in 2014 to switch users off of Methadone and onto Methadose.

It’s one thing to make a decision but an entirely different thing to stick with it knowing it’s negatively affecting 15,000 people. And when I say negatively, I mean, killing them.

The Skimmer’s Hook: A question well worth pondering.

Listen if you like: Podcast Trailers, Life Questions

So here’s something different - something I’ve NEVER done before. I’m recommending a trailer. Why, you ask? Because I love the concept of this show.

Given that it’s only 3 minutes long, I don’t want to spoil it for you. In the trailer, the host poses a question that I think we all can relate to and something that will make you stop and think deeply about yourself and more than likely, the ones you love.

Last year, I recommended an episode that made you think about what type of affliction was the worst and I thought it would be fun to have that conversation with friends (unless you suffered from one of them).

Mementos poses another question that would be a great conversation starter for you and your friends when you invite them over to help clean out your attic.

Not Just The Facts

The Skimmer’s Hook: Do you really want your news to be objective?

Listen if you like: Journalism, To Think

Scene: It’s early Friday morning, the second day of Third Coast, and I sit down with my bacon-less plate of eggs (sad emoji) next to a stranger. I didn’t know who she was or what she did. We proceeded to share audio we have loved recently. I want to think that I was as enlightening to her as she was to me because I’m already hooked on a few of her recommendations.

The View from Somewhere is a new show about non-objective journalism. All my life, I’ve always thought I wanted objective journalism. Give me the facts and let me make the decision. Is it time to rethink that lifelong strategy?

Like the Mementos trailer above, this episode makes you think. This first episode is essentially a compelling extended trailer about whether traditional objective journalism is something we should want.

Expect an Extra Hot Sauce follow up as I get into other episodes.

Extra Hot Sauce

Last week, I mentioned Mac Power Users which is a show for us Mac geeks. As it turns out, they recently interviewed my friend Ian Elsner, who hosts the Museum Archipelago podcast. Ian talks about his geeky setup to create museum exhibits all over the world. (89 mins)

To know me is to know that I LOATHE sports talk radio. I chastise all my friends constantly when they bring them up. This is why I was surprised to like the new ESPN Daily podcast. I don’t even like Jerry Jones (the Cowboys owner) but I thought this episode was well done that I listened to it all the way through. If you are looking for a daily sports podcast, check this show out. Thanks for the heads up, PO. (19 mins)
