2019 Symposium on Space Innovations

The Symposium on Space Innovations took place on November 18th, 2019 at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Georgia Tech partnered with industry to host the third annual Symposium on Space Innovations, highlighting recent innovations in space science and technology. The 2019 conference program included a combination of technical presentations, panel discussions, and guest speakers, as well as a key note talk given by Maj. Gen. Charles Bolden, former NASA Administrator and Astronaut. Additional conference activities include a conference reception, exhibit hall, and ongoing networking events! NASA Aeronautics: Aviation at the Leading Edge

Throughout October and November, Old Dominion University partnered with NASA and selected Space Grants to host a free webinar series titled NASA Aeronautics: Aviation at the Leading Edge. Each webinar was moderated by a director from a different Space Grant, with the last (November 6th) webinar being moderated by GSGC's Director, Dr. Stephen Ruffin.
This webinar series allows you get to know the people, the ideas and the technology that are driving the revolutionary work done by the first “A” in NASA – NASA Aeronautics. NASA has made decades of contributions to aviation. Every U.S. commercial aircraft and control tower have NASA-developed technology on board. The next great aviation transformations are being designed and engineered right now, from the return of supersonic flight to the emergence of flying cars and electrified aircraft.

Physics Demo Night at the University of West Georgia
|

K-12 students, university students and staff, and other members of the local community gathered in the Math-Physics Lecture Hall on Friday, October 25th for Physics Demonstration Night at the University of West Georgia. Physics student Zack and physics professors de Silva, Hasbun, and de Mayo demonstrated important physics principles through unique and fun experiments. These included Halloweenie (frozen in liquid nitrogen), the Foaming Pumpkin, the Electric Pickle, Galileo's gravity experiment, a ping-pong ball cannon, a rail gun, a traveling flame, a Hindenburg demo (flaming natural gas aerial bubbles), the Bed of Nails, and many others.
The demo night was a great success with a wonderful turnout. Videos and photos can be found at the UWG Observatory web site thanks to Ben Jenkins, UWG Observatory Director.

Partner Highlight:
GLOBE North American Meeting at UC Berekley
|
|
The Center for Sustainable Communities, southeast regional lead for GLOBE, traveled to the University of California Berkeley, as a part of the leadership team for the 10 state Southeastern region. The North American GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) meeting took place October 17, 2019. GLOBE is a 122 Nation member organization, that focuses on science and educational programs that provide students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment. Key sponsoring agencies include NASA, NOAA, NSF, US Department of State, and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.
