Principal's Message

Dear Wealthy Elementary Families,

Today our school celebrated Veterans Day and honored those who have served during our all school assembly. It was wonderful to see so many veterans in the audience as well as during our slideshow of family members and relatives. Thank you to our PTO for decorating and setting up a welcome reception prior to the assembly, to the 5th grade Cub Scouts for their leadership during the Pledge of Allegiance, Mrs. Wagner and the choir for their outstanding vocal performance, and to Mrs. Eggert, Mrs. Griffith, and the Student Leadership Team for their coordination of and presentation during the assembly. Mr. Saunders and Mrs. Siegel also assisted with sound and lighting. I am thankful for a wonderful team working collaboratively to honor our veterans. The focus of this year’s assembly was on the ways anyone and everyone can make a difference; from our veterans, to military service animals, to our students with their upcoming Kids’ Food Basket service opportunity. Winter Gear Helpful Hints

  • Remind your child(ren) to check the lost and found frequently for missing items.

  • Send items to school every day until the Spring. The weather changes throughout the day.

  • Have a separate bag for snow gear to prevent items in the backpack from getting wet.

  • Write your child’s name on everything!

Warm Regards,

Carlye Allen

In honor of Veteran’s Day, here are two “Virtual Cup of Coffee” alumni profiles you might want to read (or better yet, reread).

The first is of Reynolds “Ren” Brander, who graduated from East in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy as a message courier during the Cuban missile crisis. Read here

The second is of Jeremy Schwartz, who just graduated from East in 2015 and graduated from the Air Force Academy last spring. He’s now in Pilot Training. Read here.

The East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation and Alumni Association thank all our alumni who serve or served in our armed forces.

Book Clubs can play an important part in a reader’s life. They allow for students to discuss a similar text and share personal reflections. Book Clubs offer an authentic opportunity to build relationships with peers while reading the same book.  Try forming a book club in your own home or in your neighborhood. Start by inviting a few friends to join. Then have the club members agree upon a common text to read. Pick a date to discuss the book once completed. Use the “book club thinking stems” to help generate engaging conversations. Books Clubs are a perfect way to make reading fun at home.
