Learning from struggles on the other side of the world

Red and Black Forum: 'The Rojavan Revolution: Possibilities, Promise, Problems'.

5-6pm, Saturday, 9th November at Jura

The Rojavan Revolution in northern Syria is a hope-filled example of what can be done in fostering a revolutionary society today. Yes, there are special circumstances, but that's always the case with revolutionary situations, the point is to prepare for those situations. The lessons are of a practical nature, but also theoretical and organisational, as well as the need to respond to the social and physical context of the time and place.

Stop by Jura Books this Saturday from 5pm for a discussion on this and related topics. RSVP here!

Solidarity with Jock Palfreeman.

Freedom For Political Prisoners Now.

Jock Palfreeman was recently released from detention in Bulgaria, but he’s still not able to leave the country. Speaking to the ABC journalist Linton Besser after his release, Palfreeman said:

"What I would like people in Australia to understand [is] that there are many brave Bulgarians who have been trying to fight against the corruption, against the mafia, the powers that be, that are corrupting the justice system." Read More

An article at Overland, by Andy Fleming, a Melbourne-based anarchist and author of the slackbastard blog discusses Jock’s prison activism, as well as providing more general background to the case.

Fleming writes: “While imprisoned, Jock was responsible for establishing in 2013 the Bulgarian Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Association (BPRA), which campaigns for prison reform and is the first organisation of its kind in the country. While the Appellate Courts’ decision to grant Jock parole was largely based on his good behaviour while inside, I confess to wondering if his prison activism may not have provided some other possible basis for his removal from Bulgaria.”

ABC Australian Story also recently did a new story on Jock's case and work.

Global Day for Climate Justice - Sydney Rally NOV 29

Another day of Global Climate Activism has been called for Friday November the 29th. Join the Sydney rally in solidarity with the global fight for climate justice, and demanding a just climate transition here and now.

Climate change is rapidly accelerating. Summer hasn't even started and we've seen the worst beginning to a fire season in recorded history. 97% of NSW is in drought and large areas of rural NSW are in severe water crisis, leaving many people without clean drinking water, a crisis compounded by water mismanagement and corruption.

But not only do the Liberals have no climate policy, they are ramping up reckless climate vandalism. They are attempting to extend the life of the Liddell coal power to entrench domestic energy reliance on coal power stations. Both federal and state governments are pushing for new fossil fuel projects including the Adani mine, new mines across NSW, fracking projects and offshore gas. And they are cracking down on climate activists using rhetoric, police repression, and anti-protest legislation.

We need Climate Justice now, including Indigenous Solidarity and Soverienty, no new fossil fuel mines and a just transition for all affected workers. Join us from 12noon at Sydney's Townhall.

We're also excited to announce to announce semi regular film screenings will be returning to Jura in the coming weeks, including in support of the Sydney branch of the Industrial Workers of the World.
