Also known as “The Wizard of Cosme Velho” from Rio de Janeiro, Machado de Assis (1839-1908), was the pioneer Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright, and short-story writer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of Brazilian Literature. He has been widely revered by American writers from Susan Sontag to Woody Allen and was a contemporary of Henry James and Mark Twain.
