Highlights from The Carpentries Community Calendar
Community Calls and Teaching Demo Sessions
Several community discussions and teaching demo sessions have been scheduled this month. Check out our community calendar for the community calls in different time zones where you are welcome to ask questions related to organising and teaching Carpentries workshops. Sign up on this Etherpad. If you have taught at a recent workshop, your feedback and advice to others on these calls will be highly valuable. If you have been recently trained at an instructor training workshop, attend a Teaching Demo session. This session is a checkout requirement for becoming a certified instructor.
Themed Discussion Session
UC Berkeley is teaching thousands of students in a variety of classes each semester using Jupyter Notebooks hosted on a campus Jupyterhub. On 4 December 2019 at 18:00 UTC (check your time) Eric Van Dusen (ericvd@berkeley.edu) will provide an overview of the Undergraduate Data Science Curriculum at UC Berkeley and its Institutional Transformation. The Carpentries Vision Statement
The Carpentries vision is to be the leading inclusive community teaching computing and data skills. In a recent blog post, Tracy Teal, Amy Hodge, and Kari L. Jordan write “there is more that we as a community can and should do. We have a responsibility and opportunity to connect, listen, learn, do and help each other. We all came to the Carpentries community via different paths; this network of paths connects us, makes us stronger, and enables us to achieve more toward our vision of the world. We are not there yet, but we can commit as a community to who we are and where we want to be, and then work together to achieve these goals.” We invite you to read the blog post and share your thoughts on our vision statement by tagging @thecarpentries on Twitter.
CZI-Moore Funding of $2.65 Million
We are thrilled to announce The Carpentries has received funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). The funding of $2.65 million over 3 years will be used to better sustain and scale existing programs such as instructor training, build new capacity to support local communities, enable community-contributed curriculum development and improve the accessibility of our material. With this opportunity, we aim to prioritise capacity building in our Trainers program, support more community-contributed curriculum development and support the development of local communities. CarpentryCon 2020 Task Force
The CarpentryCon Task Force invites your proposals for CarpentryCon 2020. You can submit ideas for sessions that will allow you to share your knowledge and skills to help enhance research, learning outcomes, and productivity across the board for librarians, scientists, and technologists from various domains. The task force has developed an enriching program with ample opportunities for networking, learning, and discussions on The Carpentries experiences within our diverse community. Instructions and examples for the submission can be read on our blog.
Executive Council Elections
The call for candidates for the 2020 Carpentries Executive Council is now open. Every member of The Carpentries community is encouraged to participate in the process by nominating themselves or a qualified individual for one of the seats opened up for this election. Nominations for the community-elected position can be submitted via this form. For the council-elected positions, you can nominate yourself via this form or nominate others via this form. Read further details in this blog post.
Instructor Development Committee
The Instructor Development Committee is exploring a new project: An overhaul of the instructor notes for our lessons. IDC members will be meeting with maintainers over the next few weeks to gather feedback. Look out for updates on our blog in early December, and connect with the committee by emailing idclt@carpentries.org if you have ideas or want to get involved.
Membership Team
The next set of Member Organisation Council Meetings will be held on 18 and 19 November 2019. If you are at a Carpentries Member Organisation and would like to connect with other member organisation representatives and The Carpentries for updates and discussions around community building, sustainability, and programs, sign up on this etherpad to attend a meeting. The last Member Organisation Council meetings led to some great tips and tricks, which you can catch up on in this blog post.

Mentoring and training program for Open Life Science
Open Life Science (https://openlifesci.org/) is a mentoring and training program for early-stage researchers and potential academic leaders who want to become ambassadors for Life Science in their communities. Developed as a part of the Mozilla Open Leaders X initiative, the first cohort of this program will run from January to April 2020. Schedule and participation guidelines are available online.
