Welcome to the Streatham & Marlborough Sweep (SMS), a regular update of club news.

Notice of Annual General Meeting - 23 November

The Streatham & Marlborough AGM will take place on 23 November 2019 at the clubhouse from 6pm. Please make every effort to attend - this is your club and you can directly influence the direction that it takes. I would stress that it’s important to hear from all members whether you have been with us for one season or fifty. Every view counts. After a (hopefully) quick meeting, there will be a club night with food available from our wonderful tea ladies. All welcome to attend, even if you can’t make the AGM.

The evening will consist of reports from the officers, elections of officials for 2020 and agreement of fees. As far as I am aware, the current incumbents are willing to stand for election with the exception of:

  • Chairman – John Greenwood stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • Membership – Dan Johnson stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • Women’s Club Captain – Emma Williams stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • Women’s 1st XI Captain – Tanya Wanless stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • Men’s 2nd XI Captain – Armani Sharif stepping down. We have received expressions of interest for this position
  • Men’s 3rd XI Captain – Andy Mills stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • New Men’s Surrey XI Captain – Position created for new league team. We have received an expression of interest for this position in order to get off the ground but looking for a job share if possible
  • Men’s Midweek / Slam Captain – David Cook stepping down. We have received an expression of interest for this position
  • Women’s Slam Captain – Kathryn Tharby stepping down.
  • Men’s Surrey Championship Representative – Justin Sbresni stepping down.

If you are wish to make a proposal, appoint a proxy, express interest in a position or are unable to make the AGM, please do so by contacting us via the club e-mail (enquiries.smcricketclub@gmail.com).

Senior Awards & a New Life Member

A fantastic evening was had by all the End of Season dinner celebrating the success of the club in 2019. Awards were given as follows:
Dan Johnson (Club Person of the Year), Saifullah Sarwavkhan (Club Player of the Year), Izzy Marin Curtoud (Women’s Senior & Junior Player of the Year), Olly Khan (Junior Player of the Year), Luke Cheadle (1st XI), Saifullah Sarwavkhan (2nd XI), Ravi Paul (3rd XI), Jack Ettinger (4th XI), Luke MacWilliam (5th), Tony Hewitt (6th XI).

Peter Edwards, “Coach” to many and our current president, was awarded life membership on the evening in recognition of his long service to the club. Peter has been President since 2008 and a member for over 25 years. In that time, he has helped the club through some dark periods, helping to keep the club afloat in the beginning but, more recently has been instrumental in the formation of the Women’s section and kept us well oiled with his trademark Rum Punch. Peter joins Mark Bartolo, Roger Price and Eddie Goodchild as our current life members.

Pavilion Update

I’m afraid there has not been a huge amount of progress here. Dulwich Estates (our landlord) have ruled out the possibility of us sub-leasing to a nursery group.

We have subsequently explored the possibility of the nursery group forming a direct lease with the Estates and this appears to be something which is possible, subject to terms. Negotiations have started on this and I will update further when I have more information.

For further details on the project, please see the following link:

Get your Christmas Tree at the Club

Our friends The Christmas Forest will be back at SMCC this year, selling a huge selection of real Christmas trees at very competitive prices with a proportion of profits goes to Tree Aid. The partnership between SMCC are The Christmas Forest is very important for the sustainability of the club, so please consider buying a tree from the Christmas Forest this year. Proposed Tour to Sri Lanka

Planning has begun for a club tour to Sri Lanka next year (14 – 26 March). This coincides with the ECB tour so there is provision for two days at the Test Match along with four days of cricket as well as rest days to sightsee and go on safari.  We are looking for expressions of interest at this stage. Jason James is leading the organisation and has worked some minor miracles to get this off the ground for a cost of approximately GBP 1,350 to include flights, accommodation (half board), test tickets, games and transportation. If you would like to hear more, please get in contact with Jason direct on j.a.s.james505@gmail.com.
