The Promises We Make
“Our Witness”
The final promise of our membership vows is to faithfully participate in the ministries of the church with our witness.  Witness is how we talk about our faith with others, how we live our lives with the purpose to reflect the love of Christ to others.
Our sermon this week will come in the form of a personal witness by one of our lay persons who are feeling a call to ministry.  Caitlin Ott will preach at the 8:30 and 11am services in the Sanctuary.  Caitlin will be voted upon as a certified candidate for ministry at our annual Charge Conference on November 24.  The Gathering at 9:45 will feature Madilynn Grady, a high school freshman from Woodlawn.  She is the daughter of Matt and Timili Grady, and was confirmed as a member of Woodlawn as part of last year’s confirmation class.  Maddi has also expressed that she is discerning a call to ministry.
I am certain we will be blessed by their witness, and reminded how important each of our own witness is to building up the body of Christ.  I hope you can be in worship this Sunday!
See you in church!

November's children's volunteer to celebrate is Sarah Brown.  Sarah has been a member of Woodlawn for over 19 years!  Have you seen any decorations during the summer for our camps? I am sure all of you have, and Sarah is the one to thank for that!  She spends HOURS every year helping make decorations for the summer camps.  She also makes ALL the birthday cards I send out each month to the kids, and those cards are AMAZING!  Not only does she bring her artistic abilities to the children’s ministry, she helps me teach Bible story to the kids every week during WOW and is always willing to fill in on Sundays.  Also, she is the leader of the “Sip and Clip” small group that meets every other Wednesday to help make things for the children.  She is one amazing volunteer!! I sure hope the next time you see her that you tell her THANK YOU for all the work she has done and is still doing for the children of this church.
I asked Sarah to answer a few questions about herself and here is what she said:
  1. Occupation- Pharmacist
  2. Favorite Color- Green
  3. Favorite Food- Guacamole
  4. Hobbies- Card making and paper crafts
  5. Favorite Book- Romance Novels
  6. Favorite Vacation Memory- Going to the Grand Canyon
  7. As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?  A music teacher
  8. Favorite Bible Verse- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13
Sarah, THANK YOU so much for everything you do!  You are a blessing to this church and to the children’s ministry!

UM Student Day
Right now, there are UMC young people—who might not have had the resources to attend a school of their choice, or, for some, any school at all—who’ve been sent by you into the world God loves because of your giving to United Methodist Student Day. When you give generously you support these students as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge.
Your gifts today will help United Methodist students to meet the rising costs of a college education. Recipients of scholarships attend United Methodist and other accredited colleges and universities. Students in our own annual conference – and perhaps even our congregation – benefit from this offering. Please give generously. Thank you!
Dear Woodlawn family,
With heartfelt thanks “Mr. Ed” and I wish to thank all whom were involved in making this ‘Cheers to 70 years’ birthday celebration such a memorable one.
Special thanks to our Pastoral Staff – Lance, Lori & Phyllis – for being part of my family’s surprise attendance and to the volunteer office staff.
Other special thanks to Jenah Moody, Stephanie Fuhrmann, Myrna Perry and Linda Bridgman for your ‘behind the scenes’ help.
To our C.A.T.S. Sunday School class and to all of you whom celebrated with us … we are continually blessed.
Worshippers @ Woodlawn,

Thank you notes from Braden Cooper, Eagle Scout, Troop 683:

Dear Woodlawn Methodist Men, I greatly appreciate the Eagle Pocket knife I received from you guys. It is very cool and your presence at my Eagle Scout ceremony means a lot.

To the Woodlawn Methodist Church, I want to thank the church as a whole and everyone included in it. Troop 683 has met at Jack & Jill for the past 50 plus years. I greatly appreciate you all for letting me use the kitchen and Worship Center area for my Eagle Ceremony.

It will be led by Pastor Phyllis and Joan Smoot. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief recovery topics. Seminar sessions include “Is This Normal?” “The Challenges of Grief,” “Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger.” For more information, call the church office or Pastor Phyllis.  Click HERE to register.
Children’s Ministry will be taking part in watching “Toy Story," and we hope you can stay and enjoy this movie with your children in the Worship Center.  Toward the end of the evening, all children participating in the Christmas program will travel to the children's wing to practice their Christmas songs.
The Skillz ‘n’ Thrillz youth talent show fundraiser will be November 23 from 6:30-8:00pm in the worship center.  Tickets are on sale now for $5.  You can also purchase a judges score sheet when you arrive on the 23rd for an additional $5.  Concessions will be available from the kitchen window from 6:00-8:00pm.  All of the proceeds from the  talent show will go to camperships for the summer of 2020.  We look forward to seeing you there for a wonderful evening of Skillz ‘n’ Thrillz!

We will have coffee and snacks as we group into teams to decorate our worship spaces for Advent.  Join us for music and fellowship while we turn this work into play!
Woodlawn’s Stewardship
Non-Campaign!
Did you receive a bright yellow envelope from the church in the mail?  Open it up right away!  It contains the only Stewardship mailing you will receive this year.  Inside is a form to make or renew your commitment to the church in the coming year.   Please consider completing it and returning it to the church office within the week!  Those who currently give will also find, inside, their giving statement through the month of October.
Because of our debt reduction campaign held earlier this year, our church leadership decided that Woodlawn would not host an all-out Fall Stewardship Drive as we have done in the past. However, we do need to determine what the church’s expected income might be in 2020.
Thank you for your help and for your continued giving to Woodlawn’s ministry and mission!

Winterfest is Almost Here!

This is the 21st year of our popular craft show! You may know that this started as a small show that has grown to become a Derby holiday staple with over 100 booths. But you may not be aware that Winterfest contributes about $7000 each year directly to mission programs the church supports.
However, we cannot continue this successful event without your help. There are many ways to support this event even if you aren’t into craft shows!

  • Groups and individuals can donate a basket or set of items for the silent auction. Anything new is accepted. (All items must be dropped off in the church office by Friday, December 6th at noon.)
  • Volunteers are needed to make items for the bake sale, greet customers, work in the kitchen, as well as assist in setup and cleanup. Sign-up sheets are in the foyer.
  • We also invite you to come check out all of the excellent vendors and crafters at the show on Saturday, December 8th from 9:00-3:00. You’re sure to find gifts perfect for anyone on your list. In addition, grab breakfast or lunch at Diana’s Diner, purchase homemade goodies from the bake sale, listen to live music in the sanctuary or place a bid in the silent auction room. It really is amazing to see how the church is transformed for a day and then put back into place for church on Sunday morning.
Women of Woodlawn
Joy Circle will meet November 13 at 2pm at Sheryl Fisher's home, 6820 S Huckleberry Dr. Guests are always welcome.
Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their Stephen Leaders for supervision and continuing education.
If you are hurting, please call for a Stephen Minister to help you in your difficult time. Sharyon Miller 316-651-7105, Donna Overmiller 316-207-5614
A Note From Communications
As we enter the holiday season, there is always A LOT going on around Woodlawn and in our community!  We advertise with in-service announcements, scrolling announcements on the TVs during Sunday services and during WOW, the Sunday bulletin, our weekly newsletter, Facebook, as well as neatly hung advertisements in our bathroom stalls. There is also a new "Opportunities to be the Heart, Hands, and Feet" board located in the foyer.  If you would like an event to be advertised, contact Jenah Moody at communicate@woodlawnumc.net.
Operation Holiday
Derby Operation Holiday is collecting blankets, twin size or larger.  If your Sunday School class or small group is looking for something to donate, blankets for beds would be very much appreciated.  Thank you!
In the Spirit of Giving:
Norma Rockenbach has a small home organ for anyone who would like to have it.  It is free.  Contact her at 788-4991 if interested.

Tammy Cuadra sends her thanks to everyone for all the prayers. She is still recovering but is much better and has been able to return to work. Please continue healing prayers for Tammy.

Joe Shook has moved from Wesley to Via Christi Ascension for rehabilitation as begins his recuperation from a mild stroke. Please continue healing prayers for Joe and prayers of support for Dora.

Please keep Leslie Spears and her family in your prayers as they deal with the aftermath of their house being broken into and trashed.

Mike Brown asks your prayers for his parents and health concerns they are dealing with.

Darlene Grover had surgery Wednesday morning. Everything went smoothly and she hopes to come home tomorrow.

Rex Galbraith’s shoulder surgery has been postponed until later in November to give him time to get over a cold.

Darlene Grover’s surgery went smoothly Wednesday morning. She hopes to come home Thursday. Please continue prayers for healing as she recuperates.

Ruthanne Whitely asks your prayers for her sister who is declining. They gave her a protein infusion to make her more comfortable and possibly extend her life and she is doing better today. She will have another infusion this week which will hopefully help a bit more.

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to main@woodlawnumc.net or call the church office at 788-1507.
