Marcus Foundation $13M Grant Targets Knee Osteoarthritis with Stem Cell Therapies

Duke Orthopaedics is among the institutions that received a $13 million grant from the Marcus Foundation for a multicenter clinical trial studying various stem cell options to treat knee osteoarthritis. Led by Duke principal investigator Dr. Blake Boggess, professor of Orthopaedics and Family Medicine and Community Health, the research team will compare traditional cortisone injection outcomes to outcomes using stem cell injections from autologous bone marrow concentrate, manufactured stem cells from umbilical cord tissue, and adipose-derived stem cells. Research partners include the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center, the Andrews Institute, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Sanford Health.

- Participate in and ultimately lead transdisciplinary research teams that both transcend traditional scientific silos and embrace diverse stakeholder input
- Facilitate advancement of discoveries to their next translational phase
- Represent a more diverse workforce to meet evolving translational science priorities
- Leverage partnerships locally, regionally, and nationally to enhance the impact of their discoveries
Each year, we will select up to three Duke CTSA KL2 Scholars. Each scholar will be awarded 75% total protected effort for 3 years, up to $20,000/year for research expenses, and up to $2,500/year for travel to professional meetings. Application deadline: November 25, 2019.

Duke REACH Equity Center Mentored Career Development The Duke Center for REsearch to AdvanCe Healthcare Equity (REACH Equity) is seeking applications for an internal mentored research career development award (CDA) for junior investigators proposing research related to the Center’s theme of addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health by developing and testing interventions that improve the quality of patient-centered care in the clinical encounter. Now Accepting Applications through December 16, 2019
Duke CTSA Research Training Program (Duke CTSA TL1) is NOW accepting PHYSICIAN research fellowship applications.
The Duke CTSA TL1 physician fellowship provides 2 years of funded time to support the research training of physician-scientists.  We have particular interest in physician trainees with an MD or MD/PHD who are interested in broadening their previous training to include a new category of research methodology (e.g., bench science trainees looking to gain training in translational or clinical research, or vice versa) and applicants looking to obtain training in data science methodology.  Up to three scholars may be awarded and will receive tailored professional development support, an NIH-scale postdoctoral stipend, and federally-designated training-related expenses. Application deadline: January 13, 2019.
