UUSC Committee Report for 2019

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. (UUSC) is an independent nonsectarian 501 c3 nonprofit membership organization. They are a leading voice for human rights and social justice in the United States and the world.  UUFB is a member and supports this organization. This year we had an information table at the Social and Environmental Justice Committee Fair during coffee hour.

Each year UUSC has a fundraiser that is entitled Guest at Your Table.  This year the theme is entitled “Women Leaders, Strong Communities”.  On the November 24 service, UUFB members and friends will receive more information and a small cardboard box to put on their dining room table to collect change each time they sit down to a meal.  The box with donations will be collected Christmas Eve or Day and sent to UUSC as our contribution to UUSC’s efforts.

The Welcoming Congregation Committee Needs You!

As many of you know, we are a Welcoming Congregation.  Newcomers may not know exactly what that means.  Do we welcome everyone?  Yes, we do, however being a Welcoming Congregation means we have gone through a program to learn to be mindfully welcoming to our LGBTQIA+ community.  UUFB went through that training some years ago, but that doesn’t mean we stop there.

Our Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations asks us to continue to be mindfully welcoming throughout the year, and renew our status annually.  Therefore, the need for a Welcoming Congregation Committee does not go away.  Currently the Welcoming Congregation Committee consists of only three members, mostly due to members moving, and has no chair.

If you are interested in joining the Welcoming Congregation or would like to learn more about what we do throughout the year, please contact Jeanine Darville through the Fellowship administrator at 843-522-1765 or admin@uubeaufort.org

Thank you!

A Message From Marshview Farm

Greetings Marshview Farm Friends,

I wish all well and hope that you are enjoying the cool weather.  Please take a moment out of your busy schedules and come out and enjoy a refreshing look at some of our up and coming leaders as they perform The Road of Remembrance, “A Praise House Experience.”  This will truly be a history lesson, many of you may have never heard or seen about Penn School and the cultural practices still in existence. One of which was going to the Praise House.  As you listen to the rhythmic sounds of the Gullah tongue embodied in a young girl growing up on St. Helena Island, you will know that the culture is still alive!

Light dinner will be available by our recently celebrated Gullah Chefs and renowned chef Bill Green which will truly excite your pallets!

Looking forward in seeing you there!

Peace & blessings,

Penn Center Heritage Days Parade, with our own Rev. Lori as parade co-marshal!

Heritage Days at Penn, Worth Celebrating

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort has built and maintained a legacy relationship with Penn Center that reaches from our earliest days, when founding minister Rev. Nan White chose to keep her office on the Penn Center campus, to the present, as Rev. Lori Hlaban has been invited to be a co-marshal for November’s annual Heritage Days parade.

In the spirit of Unitarian Laura Towne, who founded Penn School during the Civil War, our members and friends have served in a variety of capacities over the last twenty years, most having to do with children. Recently, our volunteers restored the exterior of Gantt Cottage on the Penn campus, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. stayed when meeting with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the 1960s. Two years ago we paid to put railings by the cement steps at the Penn cafeteria distribution center, where Second Helpings clients receive food, co-managed by UUFB and Penn Club members.

We have shared many great events at Penn, including ministerial celebrations, congregational meetings, Unitarian Universalist regional and national meetings, and have hosted the Friday night reception of Penn Gala weekend. We have done that annually, since 2013 when UUFB was inducted into the 1862 Circle, the same year our fellowship was named by UUA as one of ten Breakthrough Congregations.

Each year, our minister participates in the opening ceremony for Heritage Days weekend, telling the story of Laura Towne's forty years of service to the St. Helena community beginning in 1862. And, on Saturday we march in the parade. Last year, Laura Towne (portrayed by Suzanne Larson) walked with us. Rumor has it that she will be there again this year, and, as noted above, Rev. Lori Hlaban will be a co-marshal of the parade.

Join us on Thursday afternoon, November 7, for the opening ceremony. And/or gather with us Saturday at 8:30 AM at St. Helena Elementary School stand with love and march for justice in the Heritage Days parade.

Soul Matters Small Groups!

Are you interested in going deeper with the Soul Matters themes? Want to talk with a few others about what those themes lead you to ponder and wonder? Craving a place where personal joys and sorrows are shared? Soul Matters Small Group Ministry may be for you.

Our first small group met during the last program year, and had deep, thoughtful, interesting conversations using the Soul Matters small group materials.

If you’re interested, please contact Rev. Lori asap! Have some questions? Ask!

Habitat Faith Build Events!

UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the Faith Build house, a project of Habitat for Humanity of the LowCountry.  Our volunteers who have gone through the introductory training have already been emailed, but we'd like to highlight some upcoming events open to the general public.

Sunday November 17 at 2pm (tentative) - The Dataw-2 Build house (2521 Mossy Oaks Road in Beaufort), which is next door to the Faith Build, will be dedicated and the keys presented to the new owners.  If you worked on the Faith Build, chances are you walked over and worked on the Dataw-2 build as well.  It should be rewarding to see the Sawyer family take ownership of their new house.

Saturday November 23 at 10am (tentative) - The Faith Build house (2523 Mossy Oaks Road in Beaufort) will be  dedicated and the keys presented to the Green family.  You are encouraged to attend this event if you volunteered on the house, or if you contributed financially.  UUFB made a significant contribution in both ways, and it would be fun to have to a good showing.

Also, I'd like to remind you that there remain opportunities to do items from the final punch list of the Faith Build on Thursdays, such as tomorrow, 8am-12. Sign up at https://lowcountryhabitat.charityproud.org/VolunteerRegistration/Calendar/542

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

I say it frequently, that I’m grateful for Ancient Sea Island Continuum (ASIC), our pagan affinity group, which is also affiliated with the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS). At least twice a year it’s my pleasure to co-create a service for our congregation that integrates the pagan/wiccan practices of this group. Our “Summer’s End” service last Sunday, blended Samhain and the remembrance of All Souls in a beautiful way.

Afterward I heard feedback from some who weren’t quite sure they’d stay, then were glad for the opportunity to observe the ritual, as well as to have time and space to think about loved ones who have died. For me, it was a good reminder that creating a “joyful sanctuary” includes making space for tears and sadness.

In my experience, it’s only through allowing ourselves to experience grief or sorrow that we’re able to make our way back to joy. Mindfulness: learning to pay attention, sitting with feelings and letting them fade has been an important practice for many. We’ll look at the art and importance of paying attention this coming Sunday.

I hope you’ll join us for services, and our annual auction, and other events throughout the month!

    Blessings,
        Rev. Lori Hlaban

Stewardship:  the latest……
The Cottage Meetings are done and the deadline for the 2020 pledge campaign has officially passed.  For those who attended our five Cottage Meetings, I hope you enjoyed your evening of food, fellowship and information.  Maybe you were lucky enough to win a door prize!  Many good ideas came out of these meetings and that information is being compiled and will be passed on.  Your input is very important.

At this time, we have received around $100,000 in pledges for next year which is short of our $130,000 goal.  The pledges so far have come from 27 pledge units (only 42% of the members’ pledge units) and 4 Friends of the congregation. We want to avoid a deficit so if you haven’t turned in your pledge form, please do so soon.  This information is vital to the Board for planning the budget for 2020. Whatever the amount of the pledge, every little bit helps, every dollar counts.  We also value the time you volunteer to this congregation using your many talents and skills.

If you need a new pledge form, you may print one from the Stewardship page on the fellowship’s website.  Also, if you have any questions, please email stewardship@uubeaufort.org.

Your Time – Talent – Treasure are greatly appreciated!

    Warmest regards,
        Grace M Drake
