Snow System Readied

Caledonia Nordic is excited to enter it's second season with snowmaking capabilities for the 2019/2020 season. With the new season quickly approaching, we'd thought we'd give you, our members and supporters, a breakdown of how snowmaking operations work at CNSC.

Our state of the art snowmaking system consists of a network of underground water lines and electrical cables that feed 5 hydrants throughout our XC and Biathlon stadium area. A large well feeds our pump station which is located next to our snowcat shop. The well and pump station are currently able to feed enough water to sustain our snowmaking efforts around the clock. We have two TechnoAlpin TR8 fan guns that are capable of turning approximately 350 litres of water per minute into that white fluffy stuff we love so much.

Obviously, snowmaking is very weather dependent. Our guns are capable of making snow at -2.5°C, but at that point we are running at 20%-30% efficiency.
Optimally, we look for a forecast below -6°C which will bring efficiency up to 50-60%, with no predicted spike in temperature that could cause our efforts to melt.

The goal this year will be to lay down a ribbon of snow through the stadiums as early as weather allows us to get started, and then fill in the rest of the serviced area as temperatures allow. This will allow our members and athletes good early skiing as soon as possible.

Let's all do a dance for some colder temperatures as well as natural snow so we can get this season going!

If you have any snowmaking related questions, don't hesitate to email me, Mike Palangio at trailsmanager@caledonianordic.com.

Stay tuned for updates, and we'll be sure to let everyone know as soon as we fire up the guns.
