Help Us Feed Kids in 2020!
Support the causes you love--like the Locker Project.
As 2019 comes to a close, we pause to thank our many supporters, old and new, and ask that you consider making a donation. Your gift to the Locker Project will help provide nourishing food to children and families across Greater Portland at risk of hunger. Look for our Annual Appeal to arrive in the mail, shop through smile.amazon.com, and mark your calendars for #GivingTuesday, December 3, when donations made through Facebook (donate early!) may be matched. Help us help them.

The Locker Project Is Growing!
More school pantries: Our take-home food programs now reach children at 26 schools and preschools in Greater Portland. Among our newest Portland sites are Casco Bay High School, Portland High School, and Ocean Avenue School. We have new programs in South Portland at Mahoney Middle School and Small Elementary. In early 2020, we will launch pantries at four Head Start locations (see article link below), bringing our total number of program sites to 30!

More committed staff: Join us in welcoming long-time volunteer Jeff Lyons and USM intern Courtney Bowers to our crew!

More healthy food: Thanks to our partnerships with
Good Shepherd Food Bank, Hannaford Supermarkets, Shaw's, Rosemont Market, and Standard Baking, we expect to top 200,000 pounds of healthy food distributed in 2019. And thanks to two local businesses, we will be filling 850 Locker Project holiday bags in December. Assorted staples will go home with food-insecure children to help ensure they have the nutrition they need during the long winter break.
Volunteer Spotlight
Like clockwork, every two weeks, Renee Roy-DePeter, pantry liaison at Westbrook Middle School, takes a look at what’s in the school's food pantry and comes over to our warehouse to pack boxes with healthy staples and snacks. Renee explains: "Last year my friend, Amie Boucher, Student Liaison at the school, asked if I would be willing to help her with the pantry. I have had my eyes opened wide to the extent that food insecurity affects children not only in Westbrook, but in many other school systems. I consider it a privilege to have a role in keeping the Falcon's Nest well-stocked."

IN THE NEWS

We're on the radio: Check out the latest Maine Points episode--Danny Martignetti talks with Deb Bergeron, founder of 100 Women Who Care Southern Maine; Donna Dwyer, who heads up Westbrook's My Place Teen Center (first half of the broadcast); and Locker Project Executive Director Kathryn Sargent (second half). 100+ Women Who Care Southern Maine's nearly 400 members have donated more than $14,500 to support Locker Project programs.
And in the papers: On November 13th, Hannaford Supermarkets announced it would donate $1 million to expand school pantries across the Northeast. The Fuel Kids at School initiative in Maine will provide children enrolled in Head Start with access to healthy food to take home. In Cumberland County, the Locker Project will be teaming up with The Opportunity Alliance to add four new pantries at Head Start locations in Portland, Westbrook, and Gorham.
