PLSC 297 Democratic Erosion (1 cr) -- Honors/Ethics Course

Many have argued that the world has entered a time of democratic erosion. This course will examine the patterns by which such erosion commonly occurs: how do democracies transition into authoritarianism? The course will examine the framework developed in the book How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. It will also review circumstances in a few select countries (including the United States) in which democratic erosion has been alleged to have occurred or to be occurring. Read the story…

Education Abroad: Literary London

The English Department’s popular “Literary London” summer study abroad program has been extended to five weeks, May 17 to June 19, 2020, in order to better accommodate Paterno Fellows. This year, “Literary London” offers 6 credits in English, divided between two courses: “Virginia Woolf’s London” and “What is Shakespeare? Renaissance Drama on Stage and Page.” Students live in shared apartments in London’s historic Bloomsbury neighborhood, and the courses integrate field trips and performances in and around London. Ethics Courses

Check our website for courses you can take to meet the PFP Ethics requirement. New courses are added as departments alert us of their offerings, or as students bring them to our attention. Students must complete 3 credits in ethics (one 3-credit course, or a series of 1- or 2-credit courses) before graduation.

PFP Service/Leadership Requirement

Fellows are expected to take on a leadership role or offer volunteer services to a community of their choice totaling at least 50 hours during their college career. Participants in the Presidential Leadership Academy automatically meet this requirement. To document a leadership or service experience, download the Leadership or Service Documentation Form; complete and submit it using the contact information on the form. Hours may be reported as they are completed for short-term projects, or after the minimum time is met for long-term experiences.

These grants support undergraduate student engagement in original research, scholarship, and creative work under the direct supervision of a faculty member. Undergraduate Summer Internships at Gettysburg National Military Park and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Do you have an interest in preserving our nation’s history and sharing it with the public? Do you want to put your knowledge of history to good use this summer? The Richards Civil War Era Center at Penn State invites applications from qualified Penn State undergraduate students for four paid positions at National Park Service historic sites during the summer of 2020: two at Gettysburg National Military Park and two at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The internships provide students hands-on experience in the work of public history. These non-credit internships come with a $3,500 stipend and free housing at the national parks. More info…

We are looking for several representatives in the first and second year to serve on the Paterno Fellows Program Student Advisory Board. Students can be aspiring or admitted. The Board meets with the Director several times every year to discuss ideas and concerns for the Program. State College Area School District Volunteer Opportunities

The V.I.P.S (Volunteers in Public Schools) Tutoring center serves students in grades k-12 in the State College Area School District. The tutoring center is located at the High School North Cafeteria which is less than 2 miles from campus. For students without transportation we provide bus tokens. It is held on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:00-6:00.

We are looking for dedicated volunteers who would like to give one hour of their time a week to tutor students from the community. We need tutors in all subject areas but have a high demand for all sciences and math subject areas. This is a great way to fill service hours or education hours. Apply here to tutor…

Paterno Fellows as Change Makers

Students in the College of the Liberal Arts recognize problems, create solutions, and utilize their liberal arts education and experiences to make it happen. Our students are entrepreneurs, campus leaders, activists, founders, creators, inventors, and more. 

Awaly Diallo, '20 PF African American Studies and Sociology, is a student leader and activist interested in social justice. Her career aspirations of attending law school and working in civil rights law have been strengthened by her internships, leadership positions on campus, and her liberal arts education.

                    
Ezra Gershanok, '21 PF Economics and Letters, Arts, and Sciences, came up with the idea for the Keyper, a silicone phone wallet that can hold credit cards, a student ID, and a key, during his first year at Penn State. After watching students around him lose their room keys, Ezra wanted a product that would hold all of the “essentials” that a college student needs.

Updating your info in the PFP database

Update the PFP database as you complete your Paterno Fellows requirements. You are responsible for marking them “Claimed Satisfied” or turning in the appropriate documentation forms. You should update the requirements you’ve met as you complete them. Please do not wait until your graduation semester. We need time to approve your submissions and mark them “Satisfied.” For further instructions, see the PFP website.
