🐬THANK YOU, LAWTON FAMILIES!🐬
On behalf of the Lawton PTA, students, and faculty, we'd like to send out a heartfelt thank you! In one month, 95% of Lawton families participated in the Dolphin Dreams and helped us surpass our direct drive goal of $120,000!! What an amazing community we are all a part of...You make a difference!
Congratulations to the following classrooms for reaching 100% participation and for earning an extra recess: Armstrong, Bakker, Conner, Fatland, Hafzalla, Kinder, Leache, Lundgren, Matzner, Misner, Noel, Polik, Thompson, Ulmer, and Wong!

You can STILL donate or participate one last time! Some classrooms only need TWO more participation pledges to reach 100% participation and that extra recess!

THIS WEEK'S RAFFLE WINNER IS...
Congratulations to Jason Dixon for winning the Petit Pierre gift certificate! Enjoy!
THIS TUESDAY is TACO TUESDAY!
Don't forget that this Tuesday, November 12th is Taco Tuesday at Nutty Squirrel. Stop in any time between 3-7:00 p.m., and 15% of the sales proceeds are donated to the Lawton PTA. Our celebrity guest scoopers, Ms. Bowley and Ms. Kohler, will be scooping from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., so please stop in and thank them for supporting our school.
GROCERY GIFT CARD & FOOD DRIVE - UPDATE
The Fall Food Drive is in full swing! ALL food and grocery gift cards collected will be distributed to families right here at Lawton

Please check expiration dates! If you had to dig way in the back of your pantry, it just might be past its expiration date.

WHAT IS NEEDED

GROCERY GIFT CARDS:
  • Fred Meyer and QFC grocery gift cards help families to buy perishable items. While these two stores work well for families, we will take a gift card donation to any grocery store.
  • Grocery gift card donations need to be turned in to the office in an envelope labeled "Community Outreach."
  • Donation bins will be set up in the entryway of the school for food donations.
BREAKFAST, SNACK, AND LUNCH ITEMS:
  • Please send in food that your own children would eat. Simple items that kids can open and eat without preparing are an immense help! Examples include: (new items have been added to the list from last week)
    • cereal
    • canned soups
    • pasta
    • granola bars
    • crackers
    • canned fruits
    • peanut butter
    • jelly
    • rice
    • canned veggies
    • shelf-stable milk or milk alternatives (almond/soy)
    • Any other non-perishable items your child likes to eat
Any questions? Any questions? Please get in touch with Lawton's Community Outreach chair, Jamie Hoskinson.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to SORT FOOD
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP SORT FOOD ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH

Please come and help sort the food donations for distribution to families on Friday, November 15th. We will meet at 8 a.m. at Lawton to sort the food. With enough people to help, the sorting can be done in as little as 2 hours.

Any questions? Any questions? Please get in touch with Lawton's Community Outreach chair, Jamie Hoskinson.
LAWTON BOOK FAIR
Secret Garden Books is hosting Lawton's Fall Book Fair (November 18 - November 22). In order to give students as many opportunities as possible to browse for books, Ms. Gallegos is looking for a few more parent volunteers to sign up and help with book sales.

Students may ask Ms. Gallegos for a paper to write down book selections (and their cost) to bring home if you'd prefer your child(ren) make purchases during the school day on their own. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Gallegos for additional information.

HOLIDAY OUTREACH
Need Support?

The yellow Lawton Holiday Outreach forms were sent out last week! The holiday season is upon us, and if you are in need of assistance, your Lawton community wants to help! Please fill out the outreach form and return it to Kristina Cerise in the front office. Your form will be kept strictly confidential and PTA volunteers only know what and how much is needed.

Please return the forms by no later than Tuesday, November 19th.

Want to help? There are 3 ways!
  1. DONATE GROCERY GIFT CARDS: Fred Meyer gift cards work really well, but any grocery gift card is appreciated!
  2. MAKE A CASH DONATION: Make checks payable to LAWTON PTA with HOLIDAY OUTREACH on the memo line. Please turn in checks to Kristina Cerise or Annette Godon in the front office.
  3. ADOPT A LAWTON FAMILY: Purchase gifts for Lawton students and their families. You can select from among the list of requested items available in November via SignUp Genius.

Please fill out the "Want to Help" section of the Lawton Holiday Outreach form and return it to the Lawton front office.

  • Donations for Thanksgiving are due Tuesday, November 19th.
  • Donations for winter holidays are due by Monday, December 16th

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM COMMITTEE
For sustainability, and to fulfill legal standards, Lawton needs to consider modifying our After-School Enrichment Program to an outside-vendor administered program. To facilitate this process the Lawton PTA Board has developed a charter for the formation of the Lawton After-School Enrichment Program Committee.

Lawton After-School Enrichment Program Committee Charter:

To consider criteria and options for the Lawton After-School Enrichment Program beginning in the 2020-2021 school year and to make recommendations for a sustainable and robust after school program. The committee will meet monthly from December to March. Efforts will be made to recruit members who are representative of the entire school population.

The membership of the After-School Enrichment Program Committee will be determined as follows:
  1. Staff Members. The Lawton After-School Enrichment Program Committee shall include two staff members consisting of (a) a representative from the Lawton school administration team; (b) one teacher representing any grade.
  2. Parent/Guardian Members. The Lawton After-School Enrichment Program Committee shall include three parent/guardian members representative of the Lawton parent/guardian community, ideally representing the K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 populations.
  3. PTA Board Members. The Lawton After-School Enrichment Program Committee shall include two PTA Board members.
General Criteria for Membership: Committee members must be willing to participate in the Lawton decision-making process and to give the PTA satisfactory level of priority and commitment. They must be fair and objective and able to subordinate personal interests and well-being of the students and the school community as a whole.

To join this committee, or for more information, please contact the PTA Board Co-Presidents.

COMMUNITY NEWS/OPPORTUNITIES
UW FLU STUDY OPPORTUNITY
The Seattle Flu Study is a unique collaborative effort by UW Medicine, The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Children's to find out how we can better detect, monitor, and control flu outbreaks. We want to find better ways to detect, prevent, and treat the flu and other respiratory viruses. One component of our study is enrolling families of school-aged children for the duration of flu season to better understand how these viruses spread between households. It's easy to join and participate in the study -- you can even do it without leaving home. Throughout the flu season, you'll take surveys and, if someone in the family gets sick, you'll be asked to take a test to see if it's the flu using a simple swab of your nose and a device that connects to your phone. We will send you occasional $5 gift cards as a thank you for participating. If your household contains at least 3 individuals, you can sign up for the study on seattleflu.org/schools. Questions? Contact seattleflu@uw.edu. Thank you, and we hope you stay healthy!
METROPOLIS DANCE - FREE DANCE DAY
Annlee Hoy of Metropolis Dance (Lawton's after-school Hip Hop class) is opening a full dance studio and to celebrate, she is offering a FREE Dance Day on Saturday, November 16th. The new studio is located on Queen Anne and will feature hip hop classes for all ages (including adults) as well as yoga classes. Interested in previewing what the studio has to offer? For more information, visit Metropolis Dance.
