Snyder's Riders Monthly Tune-up

Fall Safety

The end of the riding season never means the end of safety challenges we face each and every ride. Fall dangers include the more predictable falling leaves and early nightfall, but riders also need to be on alert for deer, which can jump out with no warning.

Despite the unknown element associated with this challenge, there are a number of steps we can take to reduce our chances of being on the wrong end of a deer encounter. First, avoid those areas that are known to have a high deer population, such as country roads lined with trees, farm fields, and areas with heavy foliage. You should also limit yourself to daylight riding as a proactive measure, seeing as you’re more like to encounter one of our four-legged friends at dusk or dawn. Deer crossing signs take on increased importance during this season, and we should all take heed and ride smart when coming across such an obvious warning, regardless of the time of day.

We recommend slowing down and using your lane position to create both space and time between you and a potential deer appearance. Avoid riding the “edge” of the roadway (“#3 lane position”) unless necessary, and ride in the passing lane to create even more space if traffic and road conditions permit. Consider upgrading your lighting system to brighten up your view especially if you are a dusk or dawn rider. Remember to scan side to side and look well ahead—this can save you precious seconds should you be forced to take evasive action. If a deer does happen to make an appearance, best to slow down while being prepared to stop completely. Too many times we hear of riders attempting to swerve around a stationary deer, only to have the deer suddenly move again right into the bike’s path. Obviously, taking an advanced rider course and practicing your emergency maneuvers is paramount to maintaining control of your bike during any surprise attack!

Finally, it's ALWAYS a good habit to remember “ATGATT” (All The Gear All The Time). It’s crucial to gear up properly, including a full-face helmet, armored jacket, riding pants or Kevlar reinforced jeans, and motorcycle specific gloves, boots, and eye protection. It’s even more vital if you suddenly find yourself face to face with Bambi.

Make the most of these riding suggestions so you can enjoy what many riders find to be best time of the year to ride!

#Best2019 Contest

For our final contest of the year, we are looking for your “best of” this past season. Was it a bike night, dealership event, group ride, or an out-of-state trip that made 2019 a year to remember? Personally, our Snyder’s Riders Ambassador Hal enjoyed the “Ride to the Wall” event, along with Erie Bikefest and the chance to a take an Advanced Rider Clinic on Pitt Raceway with Lee Parks of Total Control Training.
