Coach's Comments

"I should probably be fired!
At the start of the last round of two day cricket I elected to drop Sam Hinds down to our Reserves side for day two.
He turned around and proved his point week one with a career high 95 for the Premiers.
He then joined the Reserves for week 2 last Saturday who were deep in trouble at 30/4. Sam then goes on to show his exciting new found confidence by scoring 105 and helping the team to a draw against an incredibly strong Cornwall side.

Reflecting back on our first month of competition I’m absolutely stoked with where the squad is at.
We are playing expressive cricket backed with intelligence, composure, and resilience.
That draw from our Reserves side is one of the best days of cricket I’ve seen in a while from a two day perspective. Chasing 330 & having already lost 4 wickets at the close of day one it showed a lot about what we are building at the club for them to bat out the entire day and send a very cocky Cornwall side on their bikes with no lollies to show for it.

Our Premier side is chomping at the bit to play Cornwall this week. We are definitely flying under the radar but that is fine. We spoke in the sheds after the game that it’s great we are winning but we haven’t even put on a 75% performance yet so the room for growth is very exciting."

Yes? No. Shore players go up in an appeal against a Papatoetoe batsman.

Premiers Beat Papatoetoe

North Shore fought through rain and a middle-order partnership to take a 71 run lead and first-innings points at home over Papatoetoe.

Papatoetoe required 166 runs with five wickets in hand when play resumed on Day Two. Four overs in, rain stopped play and later, an early lunch was taken. When play resumed, Navdeep Aujla and Luke Istead continued to fight, adding 60 runs for the sixth wicket, before Carl Brugar found some extra zip to knock back Istead’s off stump.

Aujla made his way to fifty, before Simon Keene began a short-pitched spell. Keene’s approach paid dividends, picking up three wickets of four overs and five runs. In between times, Tendai Chitongo’s ripping leg-spinner to Lakshay Bhardwaj helped North Shore edge closer to a first-innings lead. One final Keene bouncer ended up in the hands of a fielder as Papatoetoe were bowled out for 221.

Papatoetoe employed a short-ball theory of their own as North Shore made their way to 120/3. With no bonus points now available in a second innings and no chance of an outright, both captains agreed to call the game off early.

However, a great start to the Hedley Howarth Trophy for Shore.

North Shore 292 (S Keene 100, S Hinds 95, R Thomson 35, B Singh 5-28) and 120/3 (R Hira 41*) defeated Papatoetoe 221 (J Plummer 66, N Aujla 50, S Keene 3-5, T Chitongo 3-55, T Duncraft 3-57) on the first innings.

Reserves in a Magnificent Fight
A courageous performance from the middle order and tail held off a Cornwall attack frothing to get stuck in and push not just a first innings win but the chance of an outright.
So, starting the day's play at a perilous 30/4, Shore had a daunting task ahead to not succumb to the pressure of the situation. Rory and Coxy looked to be assertive in how they played defending and leaving resolutely while quick to pounce on the bad ball. Just as they settled in however after four overs rain came and washed away the first session, leading to an early lunch and what some are calling the best tennis ball volley session witnessed this side of the bridge.

After play resumed Cornwall fell into the traditional approach of giving the ball to a player who can't get enough of bowling to Shore in Hayes. Sure enough he struck a blow with a bit of nip away. Fortuitously, Samuel Hinds had been send down to play reserve cricket and would, as the day played out, be a more than competent number seven. Rory Bessell played bravely despite taking a battering of bumpers and getting his nose rearranged, eventually falling after a very important 63 balls. This trend of time at the crease became more important as the day went on. Syme played in similar vain before again edging out seven overs later to Hayes who by now was feeling pretty confident. With Shore seven down and 116 on the board it, with a huge 36 overs remaining, it was getting tense.

Manaia Harris has shown a dogged tenacity to stick around in the past and today was no exception. Combining with Hindsy they put on a 113 runs in 32 overs to get extremely close to the close of innings. Hindsy in the mean time continued his fine form at the D following up on his 95 the week prior with 105 this week. Not bad from the number seven. Just as the game looked secured and Shore had it wrapped up, drama occurred with a slight error in judgement as Hindys left a ball that skimmed his off pole. The old saying of one brings two came true as an over later a feather edge removed the stubborn Manaia.
With a tense four overs of play left, cool, calm, collected customers Watto and Frew saw it home as Hayes was unable to pitch it near the stumps and Frew played out the last over towering over the ball in a giraffe-like manner.
A huge effort holding on from the lads showing the fight needed to be a top club in Auckland.

Play it again Sam

Sam Hinds has been playing for North Shore Premier and Reserve teams since he left school in 2016.
However, as consistent Sam has been he's never had a big score.
Not until last Saturday.
But you need to go back to the previous Saturday when Sam just fell short of a century for the North Shore Premiers when he got caught, nicking behind when on 95!
But this Saturday Sam made up for it. He fought to save the game for the Reserves with a magnificent 105.
That makes 200 runs in two Saturdays.
Great stuff Sam!

Take that Sunshine!

From Bouncers to Boxing
Last summer Nic Grantham was pouring bouncers down on Devonport Domain for the North Shore Thirds.
Now he is bouncing round the boxing ring.

So much so that Nic is now New Zealand Amateur Heavyweight Champion.
The above picture is of Nic (in the red singlet) on his way to winning a recent bout in Houston, USA in the Texas State Championships.
When he turns up at the North Shore Pavilion as he will do soon, it might pay to be very nice to Nic!
Congratulations Nic.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Simon, Will and Jock on their selection to the Auckland Under 19 Team!
