Champion

Building Champions of
408 Panama Mall

408 Panama Mall has earned one of the highest sustainability ratings on campus, and is a top performer in energy and water. Many elements have contributed to the building’s high sustainability rating, including energy retrofits that have allowed for a more efficient HVAC system and smart lights. While the building's optimized sustainability features are extremely helpful, it’s important to recognize the building occupants and their collective actions which have elevated 408 Panama Mall as a leading sustainability example on campus.

Stephen Shirreffs, Associate Registrar for Software at Stanford (SAS) Operations, is just one of many individuals in 408 who has contributed to sustainability. Stephen ran an education program for a shared kitchen by creating humorous signage to improve waste sorting. The signs sparked conversations among his colleagues and focused on what materials are compostable and what to put in each bin.

The University Budget Office (UBO) is another group housed in 408 and is comprised of 11 environmentally conscious individuals. UBO promotes zero waste for food and beverages – from only purchasing compostable materials for meetings to utilizing the building’s water station to avoid disposable bottles. Other conservation measures include sustainable print management and supply purchasing, blackout shades for hot spells, and a strong telecommute program.

Join us in congratulating everyone in 408 Panama Mall for all their hard work!
