Welcome!

The Third newsletter of this academic year

This newsletter is loaded with information about upcoming activities:Drinks, a Career event, the introduction of the Social Committee and a word from our External: Laura Rekic. I have been able to stick to my time table this month, this means I have sent it out on time. We will also have another poll this month, so please fill that in at the end of this newsletter.

We wish you lots of reading pleasure.

Upcoming events
The CareerCie has organized their first event of the year! Many American Studies students over the years went in a different direction in their Masters. A popular Masters is in the field of International Relations & Organizations (IRIO).

On Tuesday the 19th of November Dr. Greg Fuller will join us to discuss how you can pursue an academic career within International Relations and what you can do with it after your study. In the first hour, Dr. Fuller will give a pub-lecture on political economy in the Trump era so you have a better sense of what IRIO is all about. During the second hour Dr. Fuller will discuss what IRIO can bring you both in the Masters as well as after your study is over. After the event there will of course be time to have some drinks and discuss the evening.

The location will be Buckshot Café, we hope to see you all at this amazing event.
The IntroCie and SocialCie have combined forces to conclude the introduction period with an amazing American House Party! On November 21 from 21:00, you are welcome at Jan Hissink Jansenstraat 34 for an awesome American themed party. We will have American music, American snacks, and those huge red cups Americans always drink beer from in movies. We will take care of the snacks and some drinks, but please also bring drinks of your own, as we are all poor students that can’t afford to throw huge parties.
Dear all, if you have been following the news lately, you might have noticed that the Democratic party has started an impeachment procedure against President Trump. A political intervention this big raises some questions. Is this even a politically smart move of the Democratic Party? Or will it only strengthen the voice of Trump supports? The Academiccie wants to invite you to come ask these questions to Dr. Jelfs November the 25th, where he will give a short introduction on the current situation and then give us the opportunity to ask questions about the impeachment. So prepare some interesting questions and come pounder with us about the pros and cons of impeachment!
This year we will have another thanksgiving dinner on the 28th of November. The time and location are not yet determined, but we still wanted to let you know about this traditional event. The location will be determined in the coming week, so keep your eye on our facebook page.
The sign-ups for this event have already closed.
We have been allowed to go to a broadcasting of De Wereld Draait Door, a daily talk show on NPO 1. The broadcast will be on the 29th of November in Amsterdam. We will go with 15 of our members, a variety from different years. The show will start around 19:00, but before that, we will have an exciting introduction program where we will see the studio, etc., this means we have to be at the studio at 17:45. The broadcast will end at about 20:00, and afterward, we will have plenty of time to travel back to Groningen or your hometown.
There will be no costs for the broadcast visit, but you will have to pay for the traveling yourself. But considering we all have a free OV on friday that should not be a problem
If you were not able to sign-up, you might be able to do that next time around. We want to do this next year as well.

(this time the real one ;)

Hi!

So... did everyone survive the first exam period of this academic year?! I think it’s safe to say that we’re all glad that it is over for now, especially because that means we can give EPU our full attention again. And we have a lot of fun and interesting activities ahead of us, so I’m really excited for these upcoming weeks!

The committees have had some time to get to know each other, and the first events were a success! Personally, I love to see how the sponsorships are working out so far. We have earned our first sponsorship payment during the Halloween drink in Warhol! So let me take this moment to thank you all, your drinking habits didn’t disappoint ;)
I suggest we continue this during the upcoming events, so I hope to see you all there!

Love,

Laura
Commissioner of External Affairs

Introducing:

The Social Committee

By Committee Chair Thomas Vollema

A recurring segment where we introduce a new committee each month.

Dear EPU members, companions, or whoever might read this. It is a pleasure for me to introduce the Social committee in this month’s newsletter! The Socialcie consists of Thomas Prijs, David, Sheila, Tessa, Charlotte, Kelly, and me, Thomas Vollema. It is a big committee, but the more, the merrier of course. We are here to make sure you’ll have a lot of fun this year, with many fun activities, besides all the studying you’ll have to do. Besides all the fun, we have gotten the opportunity to get you moving as well because there is a new position in the Socialcie this year: The Commissioner of Sports. Who else than Thomas Prijs could fulfill this position, for the first time in EPU’s history?

Our main ideas for this year are to get a larger variety of events while keeping traditional events alive and more activities that don’t cost any money. Last year we experienced that we had a lot of just plain drinks in O’Malley’s and there is nothing wrong with that of course, because of beer, but we think it’ll be more attractive for you to do some activities you normally wouldn’t do. While keeping that in mind, we still want to keep our traditional events alive, such as the Thanksgiving dinner, which is coming right up, the Superbowl drink, and the Welcome Back drink, for our members who are studying abroad.

By the time you read this, we already had some of our promised fun events, such as the Halloween party and a casual After Exam drink. At the same time, the Murder Game is up and running, and it has claimed some casualties already, including me. Be sure to keep your eyes wide open as long as you are still in the game! On the other hand, we are planning more activities very soon, there might be something with beer or our first sports event?
We hope you’ll enjoy all the activities and drinks we will organize for you, and if you have any suggestions or improvements, don’t hesitate to let us know.

On behalf of my dear Socialcie,

Thomas Vollema

EPU Sponsors
Laura managed to arrange some awesome sponsorship contracts for this year, this block is dedicated to showing you what she was able to negotiate.
"Come in as a guest and leave as a friend!" The slogan of Harbour Café could not be more true, since Harbour is one of the nicest restaurants in Groningen. It is the perfect place to go to if you’re craving fish and other specialties from the sea, but don’t worry, they have other delicious dishes as well. Furthermore, Harbour Café has a semi separate bar with 27 special beers! All the more reason for us to host some of our events there.

EPU members get a discount on beer (€2), special beers (€3), cocktails (€4), and a 30% discount on food! Plus, and this is the best part, you don’t get the discount only at EPU events, but throughout the whole academic year of 2019/2020! But don’t forget your member card!
