  Let's Talk: About Fires
By Conference Minister Diane Weible

My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by the fires that broke out this past weekend.

From the loss of homes and businesses, to the very real and imminent fire danger, to being packed up and ready to go if told to evacuate, to wanting to offer their church building for those evacuated but knowing that they too might soon be in the evacuation zone which would mean disrupting people a second time, to medical devices that couldn't run without power, to trips to urgent care to get relief from the smoke. I'm sure, that list doesn't even include everything that people have experienced.

As we've made calls to some of our ministers and church leaders in the heart of this crisis, we've asked, "What can we do to help?" Pray. That was the answer I received the most. And, of course, I have been praying. Click

Over 800 students currently enrolled in the Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) are seeking asylum in the United States. Approximately 200 are pursuing their cases without a parent present to help them. None of us can solve this humanitarian crisis alone, but each of us can do something to relieve the suffering of youth in our local schools. Find out how, Sunday, November 10, 2-5:30 PM, in Oliver Hall. Click

Butte County Fire 1 Year Anniversary
Brought to you by: Jim Peck

November 8, 2019 is the first anniversary of the Camp Fire in Butte County. One of the most destructive fires in modern California history, it burned 253 square miles and destroyed 15,000 homes. 85 people died in the Camp Fire. The Camp Fire was named the worst natural disaster in the world in 2018 as measured by value loss, over $16 billion. Please consider commemorating the fire in one or both of these ways. On Friday, November 8, beginning at 11:08 AM, pause for 85 seconds of silence, one second for each person who died. On Sunday, November 10, consider including 85 seconds of silence in your worship services, honoring those who died. Include in your prayers all those communities throughout the world that are recovering from disasters, most recently Japan and the Bahamas. And give thanks that our United Church of Christ has a vibrant and effective disaster response ministry.
