What's new at NCTR?

NCTR’s Sarah Cohen and Rosemary Baker were in California last week working with several residency programs: the Davis Joint Unified School District and its partners Sacramento State and the Yolo County Office of Education; the Oakland Unified School District and its partner California State University, East Bay; and CSU Channel Islands and its partners the Oxnard School District, Rio School District, and the Ventura County Office of Education. Together these residencies learned about recruiting great residents, mentors and partner sites. Special thanks to Michael Nguyen of the Seattle Teacher Residency and Yvonne Ribas of the Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency for making the trip and sharing their expertise.

Partner update

The Chicago teacher’s strike entered its tenth day today, the city’s longest in decades. One central sticking point is the union’s demand for more paid prep time for teachers, which city and district leaders say would reduce class instructional time. The two sides are also apart on issues like class size, more support staff such as nurses, social workers and librarians, and additional support for homeless students. Several schools that partner with the Dallas Teacher Residency were impacted by a series of tornadoes that hit the northern part of that city on Oct. 20. Although three schools in the district were completely destroyed, none of the DTR partner schools sustained severe damage. “Several of the schools we partner with in Dallas were impacted and have been closed (last week), but the teachers are great and remain in high spirits,” reports DTR co-founder Rob DeHaas.

NCTR developing tools to measure, predict residency program success

For more than a decade NCTR has recorded the tremendous impact of our partner programs through annual surveys and reports that document key measures such as teacher retention, the recruitment of people of color, and principal satisfaction with graduate readiness. This week, NCTR is announcing an expansion of our research and evaluation work that will allow our team and our partners to better measure and document how our combined efforts improve student outcomes.

The project, supported by more than $500,000 in philanthropic funds, will double NCTR’s research capabilities and allow us to refine and improve the tools, trainings, and standards used to launch and support our partner residency programs. The grant will also help ensure that we are creating programming that enables residencies to recruit and develop quality teachers from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

“Ultimately, this is about helping teacher residencies improve the effectiveness of their graduates so they, in turn, will be better able to meet the needs of their students and the schools they serve,” said Carrie Scheib, NCTR’s Director of Data and Impact.

While NCTR’s annual data collection shows that our Network partners are preparing effective teachers who are ready to teach on day one, we must expand NCTR’s research on impact and implementation if we are to dramatically improve how all teachers are prepared. We aim to develop a robust body of evidence and the related measures that will both demonstrate and predict the effectiveness of teacher residency programs.

This is an ambitious effort for NCTR, made possible by the generous support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The first step in the process is hiring a Manager of Research and Data to support the collection, analysis, and reporting of data needed to create the new measures and tools we envision. Ideally, this position will be based in our Chicago office, and you can read the full job description and details on how to apply.
