City of London AQ Strategy 2019-2024

The City of London Corporation’s Air Quality Strategy for the next 5 years is now available on our website. The strategy sets out the framework for meeting the key aims:
  • NO2 to meet health-based Limit Values and WHO Guidelines in over 90% of the Square Mile by 2025
  • Support the Mayor of London to meet WHO Guidelines for PM10 and PM2.5 by 2030
  • Fulfil statutory obligations for London Local Air Quality Management (LLAQM) and improving public health

AQ Powers for London authorities: Emissions Reduction (Local Authorities in London) Bill

London Councils and City of London Corporation’s Emission Reduction Bill received its first reading in the House of Lords on 22 October. The Bill aims to grant London Local Authorities powers to tackle air pollution caused by boilers, construction machinery and diesel generators.

London takes a stronger stand on Idling Action

The Idling Action Project is back and bigger than before, thanks to another successful bid to the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund. The project will now be taking place across 32 London Boroughs and will involve more activities including the continuation of the volunteer Idling Action Days from the previous project. To further spread the campaign messages we will now be running school workshops, business engagement and fleet training, and a London wide communications strategy and advertising campaign.

Clean Air Thames

The Cross-River Partnership, has partnered with the City of London Corporation to undertake a Clean Air Thames project until March 2022 and been given the chance to retrofit vessels on the Thames think to funding from the Mayor's Air Quality fund. The Project aims to retrofit 11 commercial freight and passenger boats, in the aim to decrease hazardous emissions, which include particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide by 90%.

UK Environment Bill

Released on 15 October, the Government’s Environment Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons this week. Part 4 of the Environment Bill pertains specifically to Air Quality and Environmental Recall of Motor Vehicles.

International AQ Conference

The Mayor of London hosted an International Air Quality summit on 23 October. An audience of national and international delegates, this was a day of collaboration to share new ways of tackling AQ.

6 months on: Ultra Low Emission Zone

The Ultra Low Emission Zone has now been in place for 6 months. A report from the Mayor of London has found that roadside levels of nitrogen dioxide have dropped since the scheme was first introduced and 13,500 fewer older vehicles on the roads within the ULEZ zone.

The Mayor of London has also launched a scheme to assist low income and disabled Londoners swap their vehicles for less polluting ones.
