The 2020 Election Preparations Continue!

Commissioner Weiss attended the 2020 Florida Supervisor of Elections Canvassing Board Workshop along with the other members of the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board and Supervisor of Elections on Friday, October 18, 2019.

This workshop included presentations from the Florida Division of Elections and others providing information on Recounts and Audits, Signature Verification Training and Determining Voter Intent.

The mission of the Canvassing Board is to ensure that each valid vote is counted and included in the official results.

The Canvassing Board is charged by law with a number of activities in the conduct of elections and ascertainment of results to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. Some of their activities include: certifying the accuracy of the public logic and accuracy testing; oversight of the opening and running of vote-by-mail ballots through the tabulation system, and duplication of ballots; canvassing of early voting ballots, vote-by-mail ballots and provisional ballots in which voter eligibility, voter intent, or signature verification is in question; and the post-election certification audit.

More information about canvassing can be found in Florida Statute 102.141 [leg.state.fl.us].

LAKE WORTH LAGOON INITIATIVE
Commissioner Weiss spoke at the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation Meeting seeking support to fund local restoration projects like the Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative (LWLI).

The LWLI was created to serve as forum for stakeholders to exchange information to increase awareness of the health and future of the Lagoon and its resources, and bring the most informed technical perspectives together to identify the most pressing project needs and associated funding requests.

The Lagoon has historically been impacted by the loss of natural habitat from seawalls and bulkheads, and water and sediment quality have suffered from both freshwater discharge and stormwater runoff.

Since 1998, more than $22 million dollars of legislative appropriations have been awarded to support projects that result in tangible benefits to the Lagoon. These funds have been matched at nearly 3:1, resulting in more than $88 million dollars of projects, all of which benefit the lagoon. These projects have included everything from large scale storm water improvements and septic to sewer conversions to habitat restoration projects and biological monitoring efforts.

Lake Worth Lagoon is not just the Intracoastal Waterway; it is Palm Beach County’s largest estuary, a unique urban ecosystem 22 miles in length that supports valuable natural resources like mangroves, seagrass, manatees and sea turtles. These resources, along with the visitors and residents of Palm Beach County and the 13 municipalities that touch the Lagoon, rely heavily on good water quality and sediment quality for habitat, general health, use, and enjoyment of the waterbody.
HISPANIC HERITAGE PARADE
Palm Beach County Commissioner Weiss attended the First Annual Latin Quarter Hispanic Heritage Month Parade along with Keith James, Mayor, Christina Lambert, Commissioner, City of West Palm Beach and other local leaders. This inaugural parade was a very significant moment for the entire community.

Dina Rubio, Arlen Castillo and Laz Mur co-founded Latin Quarter WPB as a community building organization ready to foster growth and hope through strategic alliances and outreach programs. It focuses on Strengthening Programs geared for Latino Youth Education, Families and Local Businesses.
GOAT YOGA
Commissioner Weiss had some fun at the Palm Beach County Annual Employee Recognition Event held at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center, Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach. The event was organized by Parks and Recreation Department but many departments and divisions were involved to make sure it was a total success. There were bounce houses, coloring wall, obstacle course, rock wall, crafts, story time, library book mobile, escape room, community vendors, and the food and desserts were delicious!

Commissioner Weiss showed off his yoga skills at the Goat Yoga sessions, where the friendly roaming goats interacted with the participants and even jumped on their backs as seen in the photos above.

Commissioner Weiss thanks County Administrator Verdenia Baker and her entire staff for having a fun event for the employees of PBC and their families.
