Focusing on Civil Rights
I recently heard that there are feelings amongst some of the families in our community that our focus at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy has an imbalance of attention on matters relating to African Americans and not enough attention on equity issues surrounding LGBTQI, gender, students with IEPs, other races and other important topics. When I heard this, it reminded me of the “Black Lives Matter” movement and the response by some that “All Lives Matter”. The meaning behind Black Lives Matter isn’t to say that Black lives matter more than other lives but instead to say that Black lives are currently undervalued in our society. When saying “Black Lives Matter”, it is important to understand that there isn’t a hidden, invisible “Only” in front of it and it is not to imply that no other lives matter.

Middle School Application Orientation

4/5th grade parents and guardians are welcome to participate in an orientation about how to apply for Public Middle Schools. Ms. Antonae will go through the SFUSD process and HMCRA parents of middle school students will be on hand to answer questions.

School Site Council Ballot 2019-2021

Voting for the new members of the School Site Council (SSC), the body which collaborates to develop and implement Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy’s plan and budget, begins this week. The term of office is 2019-2021. Please be on the lookout for SSC member voting this week!

A large portion of our PFC budget goes toward ensuring that all students get the academic support they need to succeed, without regard to income or race. By funding the position of Ms. Kia, a full-time reading intervention teacher, our PFC provides access to a critical resource for students that require extra support.
