October Highlight | Physical Therapy Hockey Fellowship
The physical therapy hockey fellowship program is a 1 year fellowship that is a partnership between TRIA, Fairview Health Services, and the University of Minnesota. It is the only hockey physical therapy fellowship in the country. The fellow is employed by Fairview and works as part of their clinics. The fellow spends clinic time with John Bottoms, PT, DPT, OCS at TRIA-Bloomington for hockey-focused rehab as well as limited time with the MN Wild. The fellow also has the opportunity to be an extension to the UMN men’s and women’s hockey athletic training staff and spends 2 practice days each week with both the men’s and women’s Minnesota Gophers teams. Brad Nelson, MD is clinical faculty to the program and provides mentorship throughout the Gopher hockey season.
The first year of the fellowship was a success and the 2018-2019 fellow had many job opportunities, including offers from professional hockey teams. The 2019-2020 Hockey Physical Therapy Fellow is David Kurbatsky, PT, DPT, CSCS. David came to MN from University of Southern California where he completed a Sports Physical Therapy Residency in 2018-2019.
