Narcan can give someone another chance, another opportunity to live a healthy life. Narcan is an opioid antagonist that prevents overdose deaths. Did you know that 80% of all overdose reversals using Narcan are administered by bystanders? RxSafe Marin offers FREE Narcan training and distribution to community organizations and are encouraging all our community organizations, faith-based groups, community service agencies to sign up for a free Narcan training. OCTOBER WAS A MONTH OF COMMUNITY AWARENESS EVENTS
Rotary Satellite Club of Novato Sunrise Evening
RxSafe Marin and the Marin County Tobacco Control Program presented to the Rotary Satellite Club of Novato Sunrise Evening on October 7, 2019 at Sam’s Place in Novato. Tobacco Control had local high school youth from their Smoke Free Marin Coalition present about the dangers of vaping. RxSafe Marin presented about the importance of safe drug disposal and hosted a community Narcan training.

Marin Community Read - High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction
Marin Healthy Youth Partnerships (MHYP) is excited to have sponsored a community-wide book read and educational event with David and Nic Sheff, authors of the book High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction. Over 800 people attended the High event at Dominican University on October 16, 2019 with scores more attending viewing parties at five locations throughout Marin. RxSafe Marin was a proud co-sponsor of the event. This was an opportunity for the community to discuss strategies to deal with stress and the pressure on youth and focus on protective factors including recognizing mental health issues before they lead to substance abuse. The book High provides reliable information on drugs and alcohol so teens and parents can make educated decisions and also serves to raise awareness, create more empathy for those who struggle with substance use disorder. Together we can learn from experience and knowledge about the impact of substance use and the unintended consequences. Working with local libraries, schools, and other youth organizations, this Community Read serves to inform, engage and connect around this important issue.

RxSafe Marin Participates in the Marin Senior Fair
For the second year, RxSafe Marin participated in the annual Marin Senior Fair held on October 23rd at the Marin Exhibit Hall. Seniors are one of the most vulnerable groups in the opioid crisis. Hundreds of people stopped by the RxSafe Marin booth to learn what they can do to help fight the epidemic. We offered on the spot Narcan trainings. Thank you to the SF-Marin Food Bank for collaborating and signing-up seniors for CalFresh benefits at our booth. Join us next year!

Purge that Medicine Cabinet for Safety’s Sake: October 26 DEA Take-Back Day
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day coordinated by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and endorsed heartily by the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services was a great success.
“Every year we’re seeing more medications disposed of safely in Marin, and at the same time we’re seeing fewer opioids being prescribed,” said Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis. “With less coming in to the community and more being removed, there are a lot less available for misuse and abuse. Our community has really responded to this issue.”
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that most of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends. The service was free and anonymous – no questions asked and this year they took back used vaping devices too. To find a year-round drop-off location, visit RxSafeMarin.org.

RxSafe Marin holds everyone affected by the Public Safety Power Shutoff and the Kincade Fire dear in our hearts. We wish everyone safety during this difficult time.
Marin Health & Human Services sheltered hundreds of people affected by the fires and local power shutoffs. There were individuals in the shelter with an Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and they were connected to the help they needed. Our work shows up everywhere and it is important for us as a community to connect those who need help to treatment or other resources.
