2019-20 Calendar

November 6, 2019

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Wow!  Fall is flying fast and we are already into November.  November is the month we celebrate the saints and remember the living example of Christ they brought to the world. Through their generosity, faithfulness, hard work, and selfless acts, the saints teach us how we can bring the love of Jesus to the people we encounter each day.  November is also the month we pay particular attention to honoring those who’ve gone before us, loved ones we have lost whom we look forward to seeing again in heaven.  I write this on the 13th anniversary of my own father’s passing.  As many of you know, my dad was the principal here at ASB for almost 20 years.  It is because of him that I became a part of this wonderful community and because of his example that I am able to honor his work and legacy.  As I know many of you have experienced with your own family or friends, it amazes me how quickly time passes when you lose someone.  I know I say this often, but I am being completely genuine when I tell you that being a part of ASB is such a gift.  Thank you for all you do to make the ASB community a place of healing, empathy, kindness, and support.  Our community is truly one of a kind.

November is a short but busy month.  Don’t forget to mark your calendars for:
  • Tomorrow, November 7th – Picture Retake Day
  • Monday, November 11th – No school for Veteran’s Day
  • Tuesday, November 12th – Guest speaker Beth Peterson, see more info below
  • Thursday, November 14th – Open House
  • Sunday, November 17th – 5th grade leads mass at Assumption & St. Bridget parishes
  • Tuesday, November 19th – Diverse Learners Parent Group & ARC presentation at St. Bridget
  • Saturday, November 23rd – Our 40th annual auction! Please join us for a Cheers to 40 Years!
  • Wednesday, November 27th – Grandparent & Grandfriends’ Day!
  • November 28th & 29th – No school for the Thanksgiving Holiday

Along the lines of calendar items, remember that while we still have a few weeks until our auction, auction deadlines are fast approaching.  Ticket sales will go through November 13th.  Your child(ren)’s amazing class projects are ready to order.  From the Pre-K calendars to the second grade rosaries, from the kindergarten/fourth grade cookbooks to the seventh grade etched wine glasses, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to order your child’s personalized item.  The deadline to order these is next Thursday, November 14th so make sure you click here to get your order in!

Congratulations to our 6th grade girl and 7th grade girl soccer teams for winning their championship games this past Saturday! Both teams played hard, demonstrated terrific grit and effort, and displayed true sportsmanship.  Way to go, Bulldogs!  In the continued spirit of soccer championships, support our local Sounders as they head to the MLS Cup this weekend.  Students may have Sounders free dress (Sounders gear or colors) on Friday.

This is a great article from Fr. Nuzzi out of Notre Dame on why Catholic education continues to be so important.  One of his points is that Catholic students continue to be the heart of the church.  Much of what we do for these students is a result of the support of our parishes. A friendly reminder that if you are a St. Bridget or Assumption parish family, please remember to honor your parish contribution pledge for this year. This is a requirement for receiving in-parish tuition.

Thank you to each of you for all you bring to ASB.  Have a great rest of the week and relaxing weekend!

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Guest speaker Beth Peterson: Understanding your child's executive function skills profile to help create successful management systems and build healthy habits to counter procrastination. Grades PreK-8 November 12, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the ASB Middle School.
Executive functions are a set of complex mental processes that enable us to regulate our behavior, make decisions and achieve goals.  You aren’t born with these skills but they can be taught. Beth will explain where she sees the most common breakdowns with these skills as it pertains to time and materials management and procrastination. She will offer take-home strategies to help you and your child  improve those executive function challenge areas today.  Beth is an executive function coach for students in grade three through college. She and her team coach students how to plan, organize and prioritize to achieve school success, maximize their strengths, and boost self-confidence.  She is a former classroom teacher, mother of three boys and coach trainer.

My name is Connor Sullivan and I am an ASB Alumni who is currently working as a member of a student start-up team based out of the University of Washington.
We are doing some market research and looking for a handful of parents with children that have airborne allergies or airborne related illnesses who would be free for a 5 minute phone survey.  It would be a brief call to discuss the following questions.
  1. Does your child or a child you know have any airborne allergies or health conditions impacted by air quality?
  2. In what scenario would you be most concerned about your child’s exposure to airborne allergens or airborne diseases?
  3. What information would help you feel less concerned in this scenario?
  4. When or how often would you ideally like to be able to access this information?
  5. In what ways would you like to access or be notified of this information?
