New Resources and Programming Inspiration

  • All content on SAH Archipedia is now open access and mobile-friendly. This includes histories, photographs, and maps for over 20,000 structures and places organized by the Society of Architectural Historians and the University of Virginia Press.
  • The National Design Guide released earlier this month by the U.K. Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is an attempt to provide "planning practice guidance for beautiful, enduring, and successful places" for local officials and the general public.
  • If you need ideas for your next exhibition or program topic, browse the 7 Architectural Considerations that are Shaping Future Cities that came out of the recent Architecture of the Future Conference in Kyiv, Ukraine and includes everything from big data on human behavior (pictured above) to extraterrestrial architecture.

Member News Roundup

General News Briefs

  • Territory Urban Design Team's latest project, "Walk in Our Shoes," was a youth-led tour of Washington Park in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Meet Rashmi Ramaswany, one of Territory's founders, at the 2019 AAO Design Matters Conference.
  • The New York Times Magazine selected architect Shigeru Ban as one of "The Greats" and highlighted his work designing shelters for the displaced.
  • London's mayor published a call to action for architects and developers to embrace circular economy principles to reduce building waste.
  • Crystal Bennes shares her thoughts in Metropolis with "At the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, Wondering 'Can Architects Curate?'"
  • Colin Marshall makes the case for "the rise of the city critic," arguing that traditional architecture criticism doesn't capture the broader issues related to increasing urbanization.

Design Museum in Transition

In 2016, the Design Museum in London moved into it's current space, three times the size of the former museum. Now, after three years, attendance and revenue are much lower than anticipated. According to Dezeen, "Design Museum rescued by £3 million loan after financial position deemed 'not sustainable.'

Even as consultants work to revise business plan, the Museum continues to put on interesting exhibitions. The latest, Moving to Mars, presents innovative designs for inhabiting the Red Planet. It's the last show organized by Deyan Sudjic and Alice Black before their departure and the appointment of Tim Marlow as director and CEO.
