Mark Arundel, Trustee
The last year as a new TECT Trustee has flown by and I am very grateful to have the opportunity as one of six trustees overseeing the operation of this very significant and successful trust. The $8M provided in grants last year by TECT  in our region to over 200 organisations involved in Sport, Arts, Recreation, Health,  Education  and Welfare is multiplied by the participation of so many volunteers to the tune of tens of millions of dollars of value added to our communities. What becomes absolutely clear is the vital role and responsibility TECT has as one of the larger community funders to continue to protect and grow this ability to support and enhance the quality of everyone's  lives,  alongside the six-monthly rebate distributions.

Where Was TECT This Month?
The goal of our grants programme is for a thriving, caring and connected community here in the Western Bay of Plenty.  Here's a quick snapshot of where you'll find TECT funding this month.
Papampoa Surf Lifesaving Club

We’re delighted to support the Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club rebuild. The club was originally built in 1990 for about 100 members and is no longer big enough for its growing membership of about 800 people.  It’s vital that such a critical service in our community has the facilities it needs to perform its lifesaving work, and we're proud to help make that happen with a contribution of $1 million. STEMFest

Thousands flocked to the CBD to experience the city's inaugural world-class gathering of innovators, educators, and cutting-edge technologists from the Bay of Plenty and beyond. Read more
Tauranga Arts Festival

The Tauranga Arts Festival kicked off last week to applause, amusement,  laughter and wonder. We're proud to be principal funder of the 10-day long event that brings our community together to enjoy the arts in all its forms. Read more
Brain Injured Children Trust

TECT proudly supports Brain Injured Children Trust, who provide the practical, financial and emotional support needed to ensure a bright future for children with brain injury. One little girl that is reaching for her full potential with the help of Brain Injured Children Trust and devoted parents is Maggie Mooney. Read her story here.
Good Neighbour Kitchen

The Good Neighbour Kitchen is a relatively new arm of the charity which opened in early 2019. Acting as an integrated waste minimisation and social enterprise strategy, the commercial kitchen not only breaks the cycle of food waste but does so through training programmes. Read more.
St John

After a year of operations, it's great to see the new St John Ambulance premises on 17th Ave serving our community with the modern facilities to do so swiftly and safely. Read more.
Learnings From Other Grant-makers
There are so many selfless volunteers who give up their time to work on boards.  Here are a couple of useful resources to help those working on boards better understand their role and how they can contribute to governing a charity well.

Our Work in Progress

To give you a better understanding and awareness of the type of things we are working on here at TECT, take a look at our current Work in Progress below:

  1. History timeline: We are constantly updating our website with fresh content, whether its new stories on the groups we fund, or information on the work we do. We recently added a history timeline, so you can see where we started back in 1993, right through to where we are today, and everything that's happened in between. Check it out here.

  2. November rebate: The TECT team is working through the finer details in order to ensure all is in place for the November payment. This includes checking data and testing the systems for the $30M rebate payment.

  3. Investments: A crucial part of operations is the continual review of the investment programme and underlying investments. This includes a cycle of face-to-face meetings with investment managers. In the November Board meeting the team from Oriens Private Equity will report on their progress to date.

  4. Grantmaking database: TECT has recently moved to a new grantmaking system called SmartyGrants. We are in the process of migrating our data across and in time this will allow for online application process.

  5. Transformational grantmaking: We continue to be part of collaborative networks searching for innovative and new ways to address complex issues in our region. This includes work on homelessness, healthy housing, the environment, and impact investing plus a number of other areas.

  6. Trustee election: The next trustee election will be in 2020. We are in the process of appointing the returning officer who will oversee the election.
