ONE Rx Growth

On October 1, 2019, North Dakota pharmacists completed their 3000th ONE Rx screening. Congratulations to all the hard-working pharmacists who have delivered this focused care to all patients receiving opioids. We are demonstrating our value to patient safety, and ultimately to improved population health! Great job!
         ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Of the 3394 patient screenings as of October 29, 2019, the table below shows the proportion of patients with three different risk profiles. Please bear this in mind when caring for your patients. Many of them meet the criteria for elevated risk of an unwelcomed outcome with their prescribed opioid. We want to identify these patients, and give them tailored care.

Characteristics of patient services by ONE Rx (n=3,394)

    Proportion

 At risk for opioid use disorder (ORT score ≥ 8)

       3.9%

At risk for accidental overdose

       24.8%

Received another opioid prescription in the last 60 days

       39.5%

So what patient care should we provide them? ONE Rx has selected what we call the “Six Critical Interventions” -- explain the benefits of naloxone, dispense naloxone, contact their provider, discuss opioid use disorder, discuss accidental overdose, or discuss community support services. The ONE Rx method has been refined, and your skills have been sharpened, so that as of October 29, 2019, 96% of those patients at elevated risk of opioid misuse or accidental overdose have received one or more of the six critical services. Conversely, only 35.5% of those who are not at elevated risk have received one or more of the six critical interventions. This shows that we are finding and caring for those patients who need it most, and we are not spending precious time and resources on those patients whose risk is low.

We need your help recruiting patients to participate in a focus group

Have you ever wondered what your patients think about filling out the ONE Rx screening or receiving counseling about opioid issues? We have too! So, we've decided to ask some patients about these topics.  Over the next few months, the ONE Rx team will be recruiting patients who have received ONE Rx services to participate in a qualitative study to evaluate the patient experience. This project will gather patient responses through a one-on-one interview.
Starting on October 11th, 2019, patients completing the ONE Rx screening electronically have had the option to provide their contact information following the completion of the ONE Rx screening tool.  Those who enter their contact information will be contacted by a ONE Rx team member for a 15 minute phone interview, for which they will receive reimbursement by mail. If you have any questions about the patient experience study or would like more information about this patient-focused review, please feel free to contact a ONE Rx team member.

Opioids in the News

A new article asks the question, "Can co-prescribing naloxone prevent deaths among patients at risk of overdose?" We at ONE Rx would say, maybe, if we are able to identify “patients who are at increased risk for overdose.” Until now this decision is based on MME’s, and not patient characteristics.  In ONE Rx we have designed a method to identify patients at elevated risk with high specificity, and then deliver appropriate services to them.  We consider this approach an essential element in opioid misuse prevention.
