Research Bulletin - October 2019 (Issue 44)

Almost all sectors are experiencing change – political, social, legal and technological to highlight just a few. During these challenging times, strategic leadership is crucial; so we are delighted to welcome Euan Dick as Head of Chief Scientist Office (CSO). Euan brings considerable experience from previous roles in the Scottish Government, most recently as part of the Justice Directorate, and we look forward to working with Euan to strengthen Scotland's research infrastructure and navigate our changing environment to ensure Scotland remains a world-class research destination.

Creating more opportunities for research is part of this and therefore applications are now being accepted for the NHS Education Scotland / CSO lectureships scheme, supporting those who have completed (or will shortly complete) a PhD or MD and wish to split time 50-50 on research and in clinical training. NIHR has also opened a call for proposals to improve the delivery of social care services and outcomes for people who use services, carers of people in receipt of services and/or are working in the sector. We encourage Scotland to submit proposals and offer support via NHS Research Scotland – Central Management Team (NRS-CMT). Recent changes to the Response Mode Grant Application forms are supporting more emphasis on patient and public involvement and the Four Nations NHS/HSC Compatibility Programme has released changes to the Organisation Information Document and Guidance notes following stakeholder feedback.

Elsewhere this month, a new report on Scotland's Mental Health Research Landscape launched at the NRS Mental Health Annual Scientific Meeting on 29 October; CSO is undertaking a review of the NHS Research Scotland topic-specific support infrastructure; NRS Pain Clinical Lead Professor Lesley Colvin contributes to an article in the British Medical Journal discussing the integration of chronic pain strategies into broader efforts to tackle deprivation and NRS Pain host their study day for pain researchers; and a host of events across the clinical research landscape take place, including the Future of Healthcare hosted by Edinburgh BioQuarter, Scottish Health Awards, The Scotsman Life Sciences Conference, the UK Biobanking Showcase, Glasgow Paediatric Research Day and NCRI 2019.

Enjoy reading and as always your ideas, feedback and contributions are welcome.
