European Clothing Action Plan

Cutting the environmental impact across the clothing supply chain

Work continues on ECAP as we enter the final stages of the project. We hope you enjoy reading the latest news, successes and progress updates, before we send your last newsletter to you in December 2019.
Fibre to fibre trials
A host of materials have now been published from our fibre to fibre trials to help inspire others to take action in creating a circular approach to textiles.

These materials are aimed at professionals working for the textiles industry, such as designers, fashion brands, retailers, work wear suppliers and textile recyclers. These include:

Case studies -  Eight ECAP recycled fibre trials case studies are now available to view. They cover our work with brands and retailers to trial actions to reduce the use of virgin materials in the production of their clothing and textiles.

Fact sheets - We have also developed a number of fact sheets outlining issues that are important for companies wanting to start using recycled fibres. These include insights on how to gain support and co-operation, managing communications and logistics.

Guidance tool - Finally, we have developed a guidance tool which provides an overview of solutions to relevant issues and links to useful resources including learnings from pilots, policy and market developments.

Sourcing sustainable fibres

We have been working with the European clothing sector to help develop and put into action strategies for sourcing more sustainable fibres. We have published a series of case studies to share those strategies and what we learnt with this wider audience. The case studies are available here.

On 30th July 2019 we ran a webinar to hear from some of those clothing brands and retailers about how they are sourcing sustainable fibres and helping to reduce their overall environmental impacts.

The one-hour webinar featured presentations from apparel brands, plus a summary of the project’s activities in relation to sustainable fibre sourcing.

Collections guide

In addition to the textiles collections report and regional meetings held as part of the ECAP action to improve textiles collections rates, we have now produced a useful guide.

This guide is aimed at professionals in used textile collection and processing across municipalities, waste companies, charities and private textile collectors in Europe. It provides an overview of relevant issues and links to useful resources where you can find out more. Topics covered include relevant policy, collection methods, quantities and developments.

View the collections guide here.
Pop, shop and drop
Between 17th -21st July #LoveNotLandfill ran their second Pop Up shop in Carnaby Street, London. They featured collections by 8 @depop sellers offering a range of vintage and second hand clothes. Over 850 visitors attended the shop over the weekend.

On Saturday 3rd August #LoveNotLandfill ran another great clothes swap at Old Truman Brewery in London as part of the Vegan Days / Nights Festival. Over 200 second-hand fashion fans queued to swap clothes with many designer and vintage pieces available. Any clothes left over went into the #LoveNotLandfill clothes bank which is permanently on site at the Old Truman Brewery.

Since the last update we have positioned two new clothes banks at @PopBrixton and @Peckhamlevels. View all our London banks here.

Check out Twitter and Instagram pages for more updates as we continue our activity after the ECAP project finishes. Plus there's another pop up shop coming in November!

Alternative business models

LWARB & QSA Partners have been working with ASOS since late 2017 to explore potential opportunities to implement a circular business model. After extensive review, work focused on a resale proposition. Although the work did not result in a business pilot as originally intended, insights and findings were summarised in a white paper produced by ASOS so others could learn from their actions. The white paper can be found here.

Changing behaviours

Over the course of the ECAP project we have run behaviour change intervention test activities with the aim to positively influence behaviours of consumers across Europe in relation to buying, caring for and disposing of clothing. Here are some of the activities in the form of case studies which are now available on the ECAP website.

In addition to the case studies, we also ran a Consumer Engagement Webinar to share materials and findings from this action. The presentation from the webinar can be found here. A recording can also be found here.

Winning on the agenda

ECAP partner Global Fashion Agenda’s (GFA) 2020 Circular Fashion System Commitment was awarded the 2019 P4G State-of-the-Art Partnership for Sustainable Development Goal 12 – responsible production and consumption.

As a result they were invited to present the initiative at the P4G State-of-the-Art Partnership of the Year Awards Luncheon, which took place during Climate Week in New York. Congratulations and well done to all involved for this fantastic achievement!
