MARCY-HOLMES MONTHLY

NOVEMBER 2019

Construction on the 5th Street SE pedestrian / bike bridge is nearly complete. Sometime in November MnDOT will install the permanent railings along the bridge deck (there was an unintentional delay of the railing shipment to MnDOT).

The chain link fence currently in place is not a permanent feature of the new bridge. It was meant only to reopen the bridge as soon as possible.

MODIFIED DINKYTOWN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Although the Marcy-Holmes community has discussed a much taller 25-story mixed use building in Dinkytown over the past many months, CA Ventures and ESG Architects are now instead proposing a 9-story, 300 unit building along 15th Avenue SE between 4th and 5th Streets SE. More information will be available when we distribute the next Land Use + Development agenda, likely within the next 24 hours.

The development team will discuss their revised project at our next MHNA Land Use + Development Committee meeting:

COMMUNITY SAFETY COMMITTEE

Monday, November 11, 2019, 6:30 - 8 pm
First Congregational Church | 500 8th Avenue SE

Many thanks go to the Minneapolis Police Department, the UMN Police Department, Council Member Steve Fletcher, and Regulatory Services for recently talking with the neighborhood at a safety meeting last week.

Community input over the past couple of months has led to MHNA exploring the form and function of a standing Community Safety Committee. A conversation about how a committee could work will take place on November 11th at First Congregational Church.

This meeting will have no official chair (a chair will have to be appointed by the President and approved by the new board in January). Therefore, MHNA Executive Director Chris Lautenschlager will lead the meeting, attempting to gather and clarify community input on what activities the committee can work towards in 2020.

For those considering attending this meeting, we ask that you review a Crime and Safety Strategy Guide published by the City of Minneapolis' Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission. This guide will largely inform the possibilities to be discussed at the meeting.

E LINE OPEN HOUSE

Based on the work completed in the E Line Corridor Study, Metro Transit is recommending that the E Line run along 4th Street and University Avenue, through downtown and Uptown on Hennepin Avenue, to Southdale Transit Center via 44th Street and France Avenue.

Check out the E Line interactive map to view the recommendation in more detail.

Join us at one of the upcoming Open Houses (no formal presentation, come anytime) to learn more about the E Line recommendation, concept station locations, and planned connecting bus service and share your comments.

Wednesday, November 20, 4:30 - 6:30 pm, Marcy Open School

Submit your comments through the interactive map or send an email to Eline@metrotransit.org. Visit the project website metrotransit.org/e-line-project to learn more.

HOLMES PARK PLAYGROUND APPROVED

Construction will begin on the Holmes Park (Marcy Open School) Playground project that was approved by the MPRB on October 2, 2019. The MPRB hopes to complete construction by Spring 2020.

The park's concept plan was developed from feedback received throughout last winter and spring. MPRB staff hosted or attended several pop-up events at Holmes Park, workshops with students of Marcy-Holmes School, meetings with parents and community members, and collected feedback from an online survey.

OPPORTUNITIES

Eastside Meals on Wheels has need for drivers to deliver meals in the Marcy-Holmes, Minneapolis Como, and Prospect Park neighborhoods. In November, we have opportunities on the 4th, 11th, 15th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, and 25th. If those dates don't work, but you'd still like to get involved, please contact Bradley at 612-277-2529 or Bradley@eastsidemeals.org, or review eastsidemeals.org.

Hot and nutritious meals from Meals on Wheels helps keep people in their own homes rather than a nursing home, and our clients are extremely appreciative of our volunteer drivers.
