There’s just under one month for Haringey residents to register to vote in the General Election on 12 December 2019.

Residents need to apply to be on the electoral roll by 26 November in order to vote and ensure their voice is heard.

Being on the electoral register isn’t simply about being able to vote – it can help your credit rating too and make it easier to rent or buy a property or get things like a phone contract as credit reference agencies use the register to confirm an applicant’s address.

It is easiest and simplest to register online www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

You can register to vote if you:

  • are 16 or over (you can’t vote until you are 18)
  • a British, Irish, Commonwealth or EU citizen
  • a permanent resident in Haringey.

For more information on registering to vote, including how to obtain a postal or proxy vote, visit

Bonfire Night Safety

Bonfire Night is nearly here, and we wish all residents an enjoyable time.

Celebrations will see plenty of candles and fireworks being lit. As well as being colourful and brightening up the autumnal skies, we’re urging residents to be sensible to make sure you and your family stay safe during these celebrations.

Firework Tips

  • Attending an organised firework display is the safest way to view them. In Haringey, the biggest displays are at Alexandra Palace, but there are a number of smaller scale ones organised across the borough
  • Fireworks must only be handled by adults over the age of 18
  • You cannot let off fireworks in a public place between 12midnight on Bonfire Night (5 November) and 7am the next morning
  • Remember to store your fireworks safely and read the instructions carefully before you light each one. Some fireworks require different supports and launchers. Never return to a lit firework.
If you see anyone using fireworks irresponsibly, you can contact Haringey Council's Anti-Social Behaviour Team on 020 8489 1335.

More information on candle and firework safety can be found on the London Fire Brigade website.

Haringey residents celebrate Housing in Bloom 2019 Awards

Earlier this month, we celebrated the green-fingered skills of residents and the local community with the Housing in Bloom Awards.

The awards, in their 21st year, were previously only open to residents in Homes for Haringey’s Support Housing Schemes, but this year for the first time have been expanded to all council housing residents as well as schools in Haringey.

Residents competed in six categories including: Best communal garden, Best front garden, Best back garden, Best vegetable garden, Best hanging basket/window box and Best indoor or balcony display.

Among the winners is 86-year-old Rose Cameron who won an Excellent Award for her Indoor balcony flower garden who said she has been participating for many years.

Winners received certificates from the Mayor of Haringey, Councillor Sheila Peacock at the Haringey Irish Centre.

Homes for Haringey’s Managing Director, Sean McLaughlin told the residents: “Gardening is one of the ways to get in contact with nature. It’s good for your wellbeing and mental health. I ask you to spread the word, let’s get more people involved in gardening. This year is even better because we have school children that are involved in gardening and took part in the competition.”
